Northern Ireland<\/strong><\/a> in June following the stabbing of Stephen Ogilvie, allegedly by Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old Sudanese asylum-seeker.<\/p>\nSecurity sources say that the dissident republicans, who continue to fight for a \u2018united Ireland\u2019, are feeding off local community tensions on both sides of the border over a spike in cases of harassment, sexual assault and violence, which has been blamed on migrants.<\/p>\n
Fears have been raised that the New IRA campaign could spark a new wave of migrants fleeing from Ireland into the UK, particularly via the land border with Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n
In a video posted last week on a far-Right social media platform, an unidentified man warned that the IRA would threaten migrants with violence if they did not leave Ireland. \u2018They will take control, and they will give an ultimatum, not to politicians but to the illegal migrants who are in the country,\u2019 he says.<\/p>\n
Claiming that the British Army \u2018respected\u2019 the IRA during the Troubles for their professionalism and efficiency, the man adds: \u2018It is now going to be time for civil war, and that is exactly what these guys are going to be doing \u2013 and can you blame them?\u00a0This will be\u00a0a major wake-up call for the authorities. These guys will show them how it\u2019s done and give them 24 hours to leave.\u2019<\/p>\n
The Real IRA was formed in 1997 by disaffected members of the Provisional IRA, becoming the New IRA when it merged in 2012 with the vigilante group Republican Action Against Drugs.<\/p>\n
It has formed alliances with Scottish nationalist groups in Glasgow, who promote the group though social media.<\/p>\n
In July, a 25-year-old law student was charged with the possession of explosives after a bomb was discovered in a car in the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n
Isobella Perrie Sullivan was intercepted by Irish police as part of an operation targeting dissident republican activity. A defence solicitor told a court his client had been asked to take a bag to Northern Ireland and had not been aware what was in it.<\/p>\n
A source said: \u2018The New IRA have been very active this year in the North in attacks against the Police Service of Northern Ireland, at Lurgan police station and a car bomb at Dunmurry.<\/p>\n
\u2018They have two aims: Irish independence and all migrants out. We believe it is part of a power struggle going on between factions within the group of the old IRA, the Real and the New IRA, with the new incarnations advocating a campaign of violent intimidation.\u2019<\/p>\n
Many local communities across Ireland complain that the Irish government has ignored the strains being placed on housing, public services and society from high levels of migration.<\/p>\n
A Home Office spokesman said: \u2018We have a close and collaborative working relationship with Ireland on migration and border security.<\/p>\n
\u2018This includes a mutual commitment to protect the Common Travel Area from abuse, delivered through joint work to identify and tackle migration trends as they emerge.\u2019<\/p>\n
