The latest model to escape onto the open internet during security testing is Kimi K3, a powerful open-weight offering from the Chinese company Moonshot AI.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg repots that hackers are using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-08-05\/major-hedge-funds-targeted-in-wave-of-attempted-cyberattacks\">AI voice-cloning<\/a> to steal from hedge funds. The Guardian says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/jul\/27\/misleading-ai-generated-doctors-public-safety-danger-tiktok&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi9opjyj4-WAxU-Z0EAHQGzMvwQxfQBKAB6BAgKEAE&amp;usg=AOvVaw23A-%20\">AI doctors<\/a> are spreading medical misinformation.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Independent<\/em> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tech\/security\/ai-artificial-intelligence-hack-cyber-attack-b3028787.html\">screaming<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Out-of-control AI systems are going rogue and hacking people. Is it time to panic?<\/p>\n<p>And you know what? I think it just might be.<\/p>\n<p>After all, rogue AIs hacking the planet are the least of it. That\u2019s small fry already.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/GMMiv\">is reporting that AI<\/a> is now sequencing genomes and designing brand new viruses \u2013 <em>biological<\/em> viruses, not computer viruses \u2013 which will be used to treat diseases:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">This A.I. Just Created Viruses Not Found in Nature \u2013 Scientists trained artificial intelligence on libraries of DNA and then asked the model to create recipes for viral genomes. Sixteen of them were viable, yielding new viruses.<\/p>\n<p>But experts are warning \u2013 \u201cwarning\u201d seems to be about 80% of what \u201cexperts\u201d do \u2013 that this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5y3j3ngevmo\">potentially dangerous<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">But experts have also warned AI-designed viruses raise \u201curgent\u201d safety and security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>This is painfully unsubtle propaganda, obviously hoping to play on both the Covid-inspired fear of viruses and trendy gain-of-function panic. A crossover episode, the Batman vs Superman of modern panic narratives.<\/p>\n<p>In other scary AI-related news, an AI engineer with a twitter blue tick is leaving OpenAI to join Conduit, a tech start-up with the aim of creating an AI that can r<a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/former-openai-researcher-predicts-brain-controlled-ai-coding-agents-by-2027\/\">ead people\u2019s thought<\/a>s:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Naomi Bashkansky left OpenAI and joined Conduit to build models that turn non-invasive neural recordings into text prompts. She says a headband could decode rough intentions into AI coding prompts by 2027, with broader brain-to-AI milestones later.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure why this is news at all, or what \u201cnon-invasive\u201d mind-reading might look like, but since it\u2019s probably not going to happen that doesn\u2019t really matter.<\/p>\n<p>The point is \u2013 believe EVERYTHING they tell you \u2013 and <em>be\u00a0 afraid!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what Geoffrey \u201cGodfather of AI\u201d Hinton thinks, according to the interview <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/06\/tech\/ai-rogue-anthropic-openai-hinton\">published by CNN<\/a> yesterday:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cWhat\u2019s happening is these things are getting smarter [\u2026] I think as they get smarter, we\u2019re going to see more and more complex intentions they have \u2013 and more and more ability to escape control [\u2026] I don\u2019t believe we\u2019re going to be able to keep control of them in the simple way of just outthinking them so they can\u2019t escape [\u2026] I anticipate there will be lots of nasty cyberattacks[.]\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, be afraid.<\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s the endgame here? The answer to that seems to be \u201cregulation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Regulating AI is suddenly all anyone wants to talk about.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Many want a global treaty to govern AI risk. California and New York may already be writing it.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s from <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2026\/08\/03\/artificial-intelligence-ai-regulation-safety-california-new-york-pope-leo\/\">Foreign Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/2026\/07\/white-house-ai-regulation\/688088\/\">The Atlantic<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/to-regulate-ai-follow-the-cfius-model-93a071b1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/UUMnU\">Financial Times<\/a> all have similar things to say.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg thinks we should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2026-07-20\/ai-regulation-why-the-aviation-approach-is-the-best-path-forward\">treat AI like the airline industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Politicians across the spectrum of from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/news\/world-news\/uk-ai-minister-kanishka-narayan-says-uk-may-regulate-ai-if-voluntary-tests-fail-93CH-4831818\">UK\u2019s AI Minister<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcax.com\/video\/2026\/08\/06\/gov-scott-calls-congress-regulate-ai\/\">Governor of Vermont<\/a> are clamouring for regulation.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations University <a href=\"https:\/\/unu.edu\/media-coverage\/you-cant-regulate-ai-without-fully-understanding-it\">tells us<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">You Can\u2019t Regulate AI Without Fully Understanding It<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and in case you were in any doubt about what you were supposed to think, Donald Trump has come out <em>for<\/em> AI and <em>against<\/em> regulating it, claiming AI will be <em><a href=\"https:\/\/consent.yahoo.com\/v2\/collectConsent?sessionId=3_cc-session_7205af38-65d8-4920-827b-7562fa65c878\">\u201cbigger than oil\u201d<\/a><\/em>, and warning that congress wants to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/trump-says-congress-wants-regulate-ai-industry-out-business-2026-08-07\/\">\u201cregulate AI out of business\u201d<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump bad.<\/p>\n<p>Trump like AI.<\/p>\n<p>AI must be bad.<\/p>\n<p>This is the simple moral math that swaths of the US have been conditioned into.<\/p>\n<p><em>AI is scary and needs to be regulated, and if you don\u2019t agree you\u2019re just like Donald Trump.<\/em> That\u2019s the headline.<\/p>\n<p>But what will this \u201cregulation\u201d look like?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a good question. One I\u2019m not sure anyone has an all-encompassing answer to quite yet.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s talk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx2vqj2e9x8o\">\u201ckill switches\u201d<\/a>. The Bank of England suggested them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2026\/06\/30\/bank-of-england-considers-ai-kill-switch-to-stop-market-mel\/&amp;ved=2ahUKEwizwN3IiI-WAxXOdUEAHf3LI9QQxfQBKAB6BAgIEAE&amp;usg=AOvVaw0BlKTf%20\">months ago<\/a>, to prevent AI stock traders crashing the market, and Rep. Ted Lieu wants congress to pass a law requiring them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/06\/ai-kill-switch-bill-openai-anthropic-meta.html\">by the end of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two liberal professors, writing for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/hJriX#selection-427.192-427.336\">Project Syndicate<\/a>, are here to tell us \u201cthe right way\u201d to regulate AI, using paragraphs like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Addressing AI\u2019s societal risks requires institutions designed to recognize and respond to emerging threats before they become systemic failures.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026and this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">These skewed priorities can be traced to the framing of AI development as a geopolitical race. But technological leadership means little if it comes at the expense of workers\u2019 health, social resilience, and people\u2019s ability to lead meaningful lives.
