{"id":328839,"date":"2026-07-11T05:12:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T05:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=328839"},"modified":"2026-07-12T08:16:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T08:16:41","slug":"democracy-in-action-eus-dirty-tricks-to-erase-your-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=328839","title":{"rendered":"\u201cDemocracy\u201d in Action \u2013 EU\u2019s Dirty Tricks to Erase Your Privacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Kit Knightly \u2013 Off-Guardian July 9, 2026<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Yesterday, the European Parliament held a vote on the issue of \u201cchat control\u201d \u2013 the legislation empowering tech giants to monitor private messages, allegedly to counter an \u201cepidemic\u201d of child sexual abuse material.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2026\/07\/07\/eu-to-extend-temporary-message-scanning-regime-to-detect-child-sexual-abuse-online\">EuroNews<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The legislation has been dubbed \u201cchat control\u201d by its critics, due to its privacy implications, particularly on end-to-end encrypted communications. The European Parliament is set to vote again this week on controversial legislation that would allow technology companies to scan online communications for child sexual abuse material.<\/p>\n<p>That vote, technically on extending a temporary measure that expired in early April, was held yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of MEPs voted \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The motion was passed anyway.<\/p>\n<p>This was the second vote on this issue, it was previously rejected by a handy majority in March (311 against, 228 for, 92 absent). But the powers-that-be are really desperate to get this law in place, so they pulled out all the stops this time around.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark%C3%A9ta_Gregorov%C3%A1\">Czech MEP Mark\u00e9ta Gregorov\u00e1<\/a> explaining the situation:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The EU Parliament REJECTED Chat Control, but now they are forcing us to vote it AGAIN to revive it. What kind of democracy is this if we&#8217;re forced to vote on the same issue over and over until they get the result they want?<\/p>\n<p>My colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarketkaG?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MarketkaG<\/a> explained the situation very\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/veRJZgMVbW\">pic.twitter.com\/veRJZgMVbW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fidias Panayiotou (@Fidias0) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Fidias0\/status\/2074871125771735420?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 8, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The vote was called as an \u201curgent procedure\u201d, and some are claiming this is breach of rules, as this is generally not allowed for issues on a second or third vote, but I have been unable to find this rule in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/lastrules\/RULES_EN.pdf\">procedural rules of the EU parliament myself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was called on the on the last before the summer break when many MEPs were already absent.<\/p>\n<p>The granting of \u201curgent procedure\u201d status means skipping debate, amendments and \u2013 most crucially \u2013 that it needs an absolute majority (361 votes) against it or it <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TmjWp\">will be passed<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">This \u201curgent procedure\u201d skips preliminary committee debates where amendments would often be introduced and stipulates that the regulation passes unless an absolute majority of 361 MEPs vote against it.<\/p>\n<p>The number of absentees made it essentially impossible for the bill to be rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Chat Control will now extend until at least April of 2028.
