This morning, at the NATO summit in Ankara, President Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9_kCvUUJglg\">told reporters<\/a> the ceasefire was \u201cover\u201d and the Iranian regime were \u201cscum\u201d.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9_kCvUUJglg?si=k5wv8mPH4QkZRuxE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A quick timeline on the war so far:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 It began on February 28th.<br \/>\n\u2013 It went into a \u201cceasefire\u201d on April 8th.<br \/>\n\u2013 It ended on June 17th.<br \/>\n\u2013 It started again yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>It was a modern war in that it was largely an affectation without depth or meaning. They did what you do when wars happen, but without the real parts. No clear aims or motives, no victory conditions, no tactics. Just bombs and jingoism to no purpose.<\/p>\n<p>So, what happens now it\u2019s starting up again?<\/p>\n<p>Well, I guess energy prices go up. Again. The US has apparently already pulled the sanctions waiver that was part of the ceasefire deal, so <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/63-Million-Barrels-Of-Crude-Stuck-At-Sea-As-US-Pulls-Iran-Sanction-Waiver.html\">63 million barrels of oil<\/a> are \u201cstranded\u201d in the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n<p>The oil price <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/08\/business\/oil-gas-markets-iran-shipping-hormuz.html\">jumped 5% overnight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anybody aware of these things beforehand probably made a lot of money on the market. But I\u2019m sure that doesn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has promised to \u201chit Iran hard\u201d tonight, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2026\/07\/08\/us-iran-strikes-persian-gulf-nato-chief-summit-ankara\/\">Iran in turn threatened<\/a> to <em>\u201cparalyse the global oil flow\u201d<\/em> (which they can\u2019t do, since 80% of global oil never goes through the Strait of Hormuz) and expand the war into the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>What exactly they mean by that is yet to be seen; I would assume increased fighting in Lebanon and Yemen from \u201cIran-backed\u201d militias Hezbollah and the Houthis.<\/p>\n<p>There was talk, prior to the interim peace deal, of the Houthis closing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bab-el-Mandeb\">Straits of Bab-el-Mandeb<\/a>. That\u2019s what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/articles\/another-hormuz-the-red-seas-threat-to-the-global-economy\">the Council on Foreign Relations<\/a> was worried about, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>On the face of it this doesn\u2019t seem possible, but this \u201cwar\u201d narrative threw rationality out the window at a very early stage.<\/p>\n<p>In its first act, the war was essentially rounds of air strike tennis, with the clear aim of sealing the Strait of Hormuz.
