Finland\u2019s parliament has voted to allow the country to host and transport NATO\u2019s nuclear weapons in crisis situations as part of a move to more fully integrate with the military alliance, which it joined in the wake of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Finnish lawmakers backed the change to the law on Wednesday with 125 votes for and 61 against, lifting the country\u2019s longtime ban on importing nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

Finnish Defense Minister Antti H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen said that the \u201chistoric reform strengthens the security of Finland and of NATO as a whole,\u201d later adding that the decision \u201cfully incorporates NATO\u2019s nuclear deterrence<\/a> into Finland\u2019s protection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy dismantling the Cold War-era total ban on nuclear explosives, we are aligning our legislation with that of our closest NATO allies,\u201d H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen said ahead of the vote.<\/p>\n

The lifting of the ban does not mean that Finland will automatically host nuclear weapons, but rather that it could do so in the event of a crisis or to help facilitate NATO\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, just a day after Finland\u2019s vote, H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen attended a meeting with NATO\u2019s Nuclear Planning Group, which is responsible for making decisions on the alliance\u2019s nuclear deterrence.<\/p>\n

The group said in a statement following the meeting that it agreed to \u201ccontinue enhancing NATO\u2019s nuclear deterrence mission,\u201d adding that member states would share the \u201cresponsibilities, risks, and burdens\u201d of collective defense.<\/p>\n

Helsinki first announced its plans to change Finland\u2019s nuclear policy<\/a> in March, prompting criticism from neighboring Russia.<\/p>\n

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said at the time that his country did not intend to host nuclear weapons in peacetime, according to Reuters, adding that the lifting of the ban is part of a \u201cdeterrent to ensure they would never have to be used.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finland applied to join NATO as a direct response to Russia\u2019s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, formally joining the alliance in 2023 in a break from its decades-long official neutral stance.<\/p>\n
