This article was originally published six years ago<\/a>, at the height of Covid hysteria. I remember writing it in a couple of hours, fueled by shocked outrage.<\/p>\n

The paper I was responding too was the stuff of nightmares, filled with horrific newspeak language made all the more appalling by its coy euphemisms.<\/p>\n

I wanted to bring it back today because, while the article I responded to was about Covid at the time, the idea predates the \u201cpandemic\u201d by several years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This toxic idea has not gone away, even if you haven\u2019t heard it in a while. It\u2019s being debated in ethics journals<\/a> to this day<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And, as you sit in sweating in the summer heat, and the news gives blaring updates about alleged record temperatures and heatwave death tolls, remember that the original \u201cdefectors\u201d who needed \u201ccovert moral enhancement\u201d \u2026were climate change sceptics.<\/p>\n

Four days ago the Conversation \u2013 an \u201cindependent source of news and views, sourced from the academic and research community\u201d<\/a> \u2013 published an article<\/a> headlined:<\/p>\n

\u2018Morality pills\u2019 may be the US\u2019s best shot at ending the coronavirus pandemic, according to one ethicist<\/p>\n

The article\u2019s author is Parker Crutchfield, an Associate Professor of Medical Ethics, Humanities and Law at Western Michigan University, and his argument can be broken down into four key points:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Wearing masks and social distancing are good for public health<\/li>\n
  2. People who refuse to follow these rules are \u201cdefectors\u201d who need to be \u201cmorally enhanced\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. This moral enhancement can be achieved with medication to make people more \u201cempathetic\u201d and \u201cco-operative\u201d<\/li>\n
  4. This medication should be compulsory and\/or administered secretly via the water supply.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I swear I\u2019m not exaggerating. Not even a little bit. To absorb the full horror I suggest you read it for yourself (and then read the comment section as well, it will make you feel better) but, if you\u2019re not so inclined, here are some choice quotes:<\/p>\n

    like receiving a vaccine to beef up your immune system, people could take a substance to boost their cooperative, pro-social behavior.<\/p>\n

    Moral enhancement is the use of substances to make you more moral. The psychoactive substances act on your ability to reason about what the right thing to do is, or your ability to be empathetic or altruistic or cooperative.<\/p>\n

    These substances interact directly with the psychological underpinnings of moral behavior [\u2026] Then, perhaps, the people who choose to go maskless or flout social distancing guidelines would better understand that everyone, including them, is better off when they contribute, and rationalize that the best thing to do is cooperate.<\/p>\n

    Another challenge is that the defectors who need moral enhancement are also the least likely to sign up for it [\u2026] a solution would be to make moral enhancement compulsory or administer it secretly, perhaps via the water supply.<\/p>\n

    This isn\u2019t just a panicked response to an unforeseen emergency, Crutchfield\u2019s area of bioethics research focuses on \u201cquestions like how to induce those who are noncooperative to get on board with doing what\u2019s best for the public good\u201d<\/em>, and a look through his articles reveals that this is an agenda which pre-dates our current \u201cpandemic\u201d.<\/p>\n

    There\u2019s The epistemology of moral bioenhancement<\/a> from 2016 and then Compulsory moral bioenhancement should be covert <\/a>from just last year.<\/p>\n

    This isn\u2019t just about masks, if it were implemented it would be a lot more far-reaching. From masks to vaccines to anything else, beyond even the \u201cpandemic\u201d. The author admits as much himself [our emphasis]:<\/p>\n

    But a strategy like this one could be a way out of this pandemic, a future outbreak or the suffering associated with climate change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Happy Pills in our water to make us proper cooperative citizens? \u201cCovert moral enhancement\u201d to produce \u201csuperior post-persons\u201d?<\/p>\n

    That is literally \u201cSoma\u201d from Huxley\u2019s Brave New World<\/em><\/a>. It can\u2019t be satirized or exaggerated. It is the very zenith of dystopian horror. And it is being seriously suggested by research scientists in apparently respectable publications.<\/p>\n

    This may be just one article in a comparatively small (and murkily funded) magazine, but that\u2019s how it starts.<\/p>\n

    Of course, it also further feeds into the stream of propaganda which seeks to dehumanise those who express dissent.<\/p>\n

    We\u2019ve already been told that \u201cdefectors\u201d are more likely to be narcissists<\/a> or psychopaths<\/a>, and seen them subject to police brutality<\/a> with total impunity<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    New Zealand are setting up \u201cquarantine centres\u201d<\/a> where you will have to stay \u201cindefinitely\u201d if you refuse a to be tested<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    And now it\u2019s being seriously posited that those who refuse to comply should be subject to covert medication to render them more malleable to the \u201cpublic good\u201d.<\/p>\n

    It\u2019s not hard to see where this is going. Show this article to everyone you know. People have to be told what their world is being turned into, while we still have the brainpower to stop it.<\/p>\n
