The US military deployed<\/a> elements of the elite 82nd airborne division \u2013 paratroopers \u2013 to the Middle East in March. Sources have now revealed some went to Israel. Their mission, if called upon, was to seize Iranian oil port Kharg island.<\/p>\n

US journalist Ken Klippenstein reported<\/a> on 8 June:<\/p>\n

When the Pentagon announced that the 82nd Airborne was deploying to the Middle East in March, it concealed a key detail: some of the paratroopers were headed to Israel, as revealed in an Army deployment order I obtained.<\/p>\n

Adding:<\/p>\n

A military source involved in war planning tells me the deployment is tied to new U.S.-Israeli joint contingency plans, completed since February, for seizing Kharg Island and carving out coastal territory inside Iran.<\/p>\n

Rumours of a ground invasion bubbled then faded as the war ground to a humiliating halt. Klippenstein, among others, argued<\/a> that a ground war was never going to happen. Trump\u2019s war on Iran is currently polling<\/a> as badly as the Vietnam war.<\/p>\n

US paratroopers Israeli mission kept secret<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The mission was kept quiet<\/a> to head off:<\/p>\n

public debate over a joint U.S.-Israeli operation inside Iran \u2014 a prospect many considered plausible at the time.<\/p>\n

And because<\/a>:<\/p>\n

A joint U.S.-Israeli operation raises thorny questions for America\u2019s Gulf Arab \u201cpartners,\u201d especially over logistical support \u2014 hence the 82nd, which could launch directly from Israel without any Gulf state\u2019s consent to use its territory.<\/p>\n

The last mass military parachute drop was in 1945<\/a>. While the Pentagon did talk about the deployment, the Israel tasking was kept quiet.<\/p>\n

US Joint Chiefs Chairman general Dan Caine praised<\/a> the 82nd in a public meeting in May 2026:<\/p>\n

He went on to describe the paratroopers as \u201cconstantly ready to jump from Air Force aircraft into ground combat [to] seize key terrain if ordered to do so, just like their predecessors did in Sicily and Normandy in World War II, or to secure or enable the follow-on forces to flow into theater as they did in Grenada or Panama.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Klippenstein<\/a>:<\/p>\n

That is a description of readiness to seize a piece of Iranian terrain \u2014 which makes me suspect the New York Times and others were being used to \u201cmessage\u201d Tehran that such an operation was imminent.<\/p>\n

One company remains Israel<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The US-Israeli alliance is hardly a secret. Klippenstein gave<\/a> three reasons why the mission was kept so secret:<\/p>\n

First, the breadth and depth of U.S.-Israeli military cooperation goes far beyond arms sales and \u201cdeconfliction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Secondly<\/a>:<\/p>\n

the two countries are deepening intelligence sharing aimed at making Israel a sixth \u201ceye\u201d in the so-called Five Eyes alliance of the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand.<\/p>\n

And<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Third, naming Israel would expose how much of the U.S. assault on Iran is in fact a joint U.S.-Israeli attack \u2014 not a Trump-Netanyahu brotherhood, but cooperation at the military-to-military working level, where combined war plans are now reality.<\/p>\n

Klippenstein said<\/a> one airborne company \u2013 between 60 and 250 soldiers<\/a> \u2013\u00a0 is still<\/em> in Israel:<\/p>\n

from which no dispatches have emerged in two months. I\u2019m not saying a ground operation is imminent or inevitable. But if one were coming, wouldn\u2019t it be nice to know?<\/p>\n

US-Israel attacked Iran first on 28 February without provocation. Iran was offering\u00a0unprecedented concessions<\/a>\u00a0in negotiations at the time. The Pentagon has since\u00a0stated<\/a>\u00a0there was no imminent threat from Iran. And the UN\u2019s atomic watchdog, the IAEA, has said there is\u00a0no evidence<\/a>\u00a0Iran was developing a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

The US has achieved none of its original war aims<\/a>. Iran predictably closed<\/a>\u00a0the Straits of Hormuz, a vital oil channel, once attacked \u2013 creating a global energy crisis. Far from being defeated, Iran has said<\/a>\u00a0the war will continue until \u201cthe enemy\u2019s inevitable and permanent humiliation, disgrace, regret, and surrender\u201d. Trump came to power on an anti-war \u2018America First\u2019 ticket. He now faces worldwide humiliation.<\/p>\n
