Reynolds \u2013 The Independent June 3, 2026<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Key takeaways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Geopolitical Importance: Qeshm controls access to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil and LNG traffic, making it a key strategic target in regional conflicts.<\/li>\n<li>Military Capabilities: The island hosts missiles, drones, fast-attack boats, and underground launch sites, functioning as the IRGC\u2019s primary denial hub to deter naval traffic.<\/li>\n<li>Defense Challenges: Its size, terrain, and fortifications favor defenders; US strikes are costly with limited strategic gain due to mines, booby traps, and continuous Iranian reinforcements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The US military<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/iran-us-war-live-trump-strikes-netanyahu-hormuz-oil-b2988444.html\"> launched fresh strikes on a fortified Iranian island near the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> on Wednesday as diplomacy slowed and Iran restarted attacks on its neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>US Central Command said the military<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/bulletin\/news\/kuwait-airport-closed-iran-attack-b2988505.html\"> attacked a ground control tower on Qeshm Island<\/a> in \u201cself-defence\u201d, claiming Iran had tried and failed to attack Kuwait and Bahrain with missiles.<\/p>\n<p>Residents reported hearing early morning explosions on the 558sq mile stretch off the mainland, which has been used throughout the conflict to attack ships passing through the closed waterway.<\/p>\n<p>At the height of the war, Qeshm was briefed as a possible target for a US ground offensive as Washington looked at ways to break Tehran\u2019s hold on the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>In peacetime, the island is a tourist destination dotted with salt caves and the remnants of fortifications installed by European empires.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Indian Navy operated out of the island until 1863, and the last coaling station for the navy was abandoned in 1935 at the request of the Shah of Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Iran has reconstituted the island with missiles, drones and fast-attack boats, giving it strategic importance for control of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Exact details are kept confidential, but retired Lebanese Brigadier-General Hassan Jouni, a military and strategic expert, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2026\/3\/17\/inside-qeshm-irans-underground-missile-fortress-and-geological-marvel\">Al Jazeera<\/a> previously that the island has the ability to strike from an underground \u201cmissile city\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to Can Kasapo\u011flu, a defence analyst, satellite imagery suggests Iran has installed a \u201csignificant portion of its anti-ship missiles in underground launch positions on Qeshm\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudson.org\/defense-strategy\/cutting-gordian-knot-us-military-options-kharg-island-strait-hormuz-can-kasapoglu\">Hudson Institute<\/a>, a conservative think tank based in Washington, that \u201cany US campaign in the region would likely centre on two decisive islands: Kharg and Qeshm\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Kharg Island handles some 90 per cent of Iran\u2019s oil exports, and taking it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/us-iran-war-trump-troops-ground-forces-b2947046.html\">would give the US the ability to disrupt Iran\u2019s energy trade<\/a> and place enormous pressure on the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has fortified the island with additional surface-to-air missiles and laid traps, including anti-personnel and anti-armour mines in the waters surrounding it, CNN reported, citing people familiar with US intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Qeshm, meanwhile, operates as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\u2019 \u201cprimary denial hub\u201d, a much larger base designed to shut the door on traffic approaching the Strait of Hormuz, Mr Kasapo\u011flu explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking Qeshm is also most likely the harder fight,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe island\u2019s size, terrain, and proximity to the mainland favour the defender. Iranian reinforcement efforts there would likely be continuous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even if the US can take it, it would come at a high cost with relatively little strategic return, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rashid Al-Mohanadi, vice-president of Centre of International Policy Research and an expert in Gulf security, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2026\/04\/01\/iranian-fortress-at-the-centre-of-the-battle-for-hormuz\/\"><em>The Telegraph<\/em><\/a> that \u201cQeshm is likely to have the whole shebang\u201d prepared for a possible invasion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course the island would have anti-ship capabilities, the coast is likely mined, the beaches booby-trapped and so on,\u201d he said, adding that an additional threat would come from Iran\u2019s ability to launch strikes from the mainland.<\/p>\n<p>The US said on Sunday 31 May that it had conducted \u201cself-defence strikes\u201d on Iranian radar and drone control sites in Iran\u2019s Goruk and Qeshm Island, in what it said was a response to \u201caggressive\u201d actions from Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Early in May, a senior US official told Fox the military had carried out strikes on Qeshm, but that renewed strikes did not mean they were looking to restart the war or end the ceasefire agreement with the strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Since mid-March, Trump has repeatedly said he is close to a deal to end the fighting and allow negotiators to tackle thorny issues, including the future of Iran\u2019s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has said his top priority is to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
