Gen. Yuval Yamin\u2019s home \u201cwhile his family was inside.\u201d Yamin himself was not at home at the time. Gen. Eyal Zamir \u201cstrongly condemn[ed] the attack,\u201d saying in a statement that \u201charm to security personnel and their families constitutes the crossing of a dangerous red line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a grave incident, and decisive action is required by all law enforcement and security authorities to bring those involved to justice,\u201d Zamir added.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the condemnations, the Jerusalem Faction said: \u201cRed lines have been crossed; leave the Torah students alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u2018We will die and not enlist\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe prefer to die as Haredim rather than live as IDF soldiers,\u201d one demonstrator screamed on the highway near Bnei Brak. It operates a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/haredi-national-alert-system-provides-warning-of-idf-operations-against-draft-dodgers\/\">hotline<\/a> to mobilize protesters against the arrest of draft dodgers and has been involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/haredim-paying-grants-to-draft-evaders-after-release-from-military-prison\/\">paying evaders<\/a> financial rewards.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Attacking soldiers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Over the past day, meanwhile, police arrested three members of the Breslov Hasidic sect on suspicion of assault over an attack on ultra-Orthodox soldier Yosef Rozenberger, a member of the IDF\u2019s Hasmonean Brigade, at his home in Beit Shemesh on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>The attackers yelled, \u201cWe\u2019ll burn down your house with the kids inside,\u201d Channel 13 reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Israel Police will continue to act decisively against perpetrators of violence and anyone who chooses to disrupt public order and harm public security,\u201d the police said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The IDF has said it urgently needs 12,000 recruits \u2014 mostly combat troops \u2014 due to the strain on standing and reserve forces caused by the IDF\u2019s recent conflicts. Some 80,000 ultra-Orthodox men aged between 18 and 24 are currently believed to be eligible for military service, but have not enlisted.<\/p>\n<p>The military has sent out tens of thousands of enlistment orders to previously exempt Haredim since 2024, when the High Court of Justice ruled that the decades-long blanket exemptions from army duty traditionally afforded to full-time Haredi yeshiva students were illegal \u2014 leading to a growing number of ultra-Orthodox men being declared draft dodgers.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Increasing enforcement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/high-court-orders-government-to-impose-financial-sanctions-on-haredi-draft-evaders\/\">ordered<\/a> the government on Sunday to adopt a raft of measures that would punish ultra-Orthodox draft dodgers by denying them various welfare benefits unless they enlist for military service.<\/p>\n<p>The court also ordered the state to take \u201cactual criminal proceedings\u201d against Haredi draft dodgers, calling the police\u2019s failure to arrest such people \u201cunacceptable\u201d and describing the situation as a \u201cknowing and ongoing mass violation of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/police-blocking-army-from-arresting-draft-dodgers-in-haredi-areas-idf-says\/\">systematically preventing the army from arresting draft evaders<\/a> in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, IDF officials claimed during a meeting held by Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara in late March.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu\u2019s coalition has been working for the past two years to advance a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/legally-iffy-and-loophole-laden-new-haredi-draft-bill-a-recruitment-boon-for-yeshivas\/\">controversial bill<\/a> exempting yeshiva students from military service<\/p>\n<p>The bill, which critics including senior IDF officers and the attorney general argue will not significantly increase enlistment, was taken off the table with the outbreak of the US-Israeli war with Iran.
