The <em>Telegraph<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2026\/04\/09\/starmer-id-cards-wont-say-if-you-are-a-man-or-a-woman\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The Government says the details are \u201cnot necessary\u201d to prove identity because the cards would be based on \u201cbiometric authentication\u201d, but critics claim the revelation makes the introduction of the ID card system \u201ca farce\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Ministers have launched an eight-week consultation, which closes on May 5th, on the proposals to create a new digital ID for government services.\u00a0\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The cards could be used to prove an individual\u2019s right to work in the UK in the same way that passports and e-visas are currently used. The Government has argued they will make access to public services \u201cquicker, easier and more secure\u201d. \u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">It states: \u201cInformation about sex and gender is not necessary for the intended purpose of the digital ID.
