{"id":325883,"date":"2026-04-09T05:50:54","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T05:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=325883"},"modified":"2026-04-11T05:50:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T05:50:13","slug":"israel-launches-heaviest-ever-strikes-on-lebanon-killing-more-than-250-people-and-injuring-over-1000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=325883","title":{"rendered":"Israel launches heaviest ever strikes on Lebanon killing more than \u2018250 people and injuring over 1000\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Israeli jets blast buildingin the southern Lebanese city of Tyre<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Rana Najjar, Bell Trew \u2013 The Independent April 8, 2026<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Israel has launched<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/iran-us-war-latest-trump-israel-ceasefire-lebanon-hormuz-b2953817.html\">\u00a0its largest wave of strikes<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/lebanon\">Lebanon in the war so far,<\/a>\u00a0in a \u201cring of fire\u201d that has killed more than 250 people and crushed hopes of a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Just hours after Pakistan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/us-iran-war-ceasefire-deal-peace-plan-b2953565.html\">announced a two-week truce<\/a>\u00a0in the region between the US and Iran,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/beirut-lebanon-iran-israel-pakistan-b2953781.html\">massive explosions rained down on Lebanon\u2019s capital, Beirut,<\/a>\u00a0eviscerating buildings and sending towering plumes of smoke across the skyline.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli military said it had hit 100 targets in just 10 minutes, including military infrastructure for Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, densely packed residential neighbourhoods in the capital, the Bekaa Valley to the east and the already devastated south.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses and the wounded described a ring of fire, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/civilians\">civilians<\/a>, smeared in blood, were shuttled to hospital on the back of motorcycles and first responders dug desperately through the rubble. Veteran surgeons in overwhelmed hospitals called it \u201can absolute massacre\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In total, the bombings killed at least 254 people and injured more than 1,160 others across the country, according to Lebanon\u2019s civil defence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were running through the streets covered in blood, cars were burning and dust choked the air,\u201d said Samia, 51, a professor, describing how bombs destroyed the building opposite, as well as nearby residential neighbourhoods, shopping districts, businesses and schools in the heart of the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe children in my building were all screaming and crying. In the street, an elderly woman was standing, screaming at the top of her lungs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was as if a ring of fire had encircled the entire city. Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In Baalbek region, in east of the country Zainab, 62, a mother of four spoke to\u00a0<em>The Independent\u00a0<\/em>from hospital, after barely escaping a hit on her family home and neighbourhood. She said they received no warning and did not expect to be targeted as there is no Hezbollah presence in their town.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe moment I heard the explosion I lost all my hearing and vision, I inhaled all the smoke into my lungs,\u201d she said through an oxygen mask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe neighbours rescued us through the balconies and windows, along with the civil defence volunteers. My husband suffered severe head and back injuries. I was afraid I would lose my son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t expect our neighbourhood to be bombed. But now nowhere is safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Israel launched the ferocious bombardment of Lebanon just hours after Pakistani prime minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/trump-iran-ceasefire-pakistan-china-islamabad-talks-b2953502.html\">\u00a0ceasefire to\u00a0<\/a>suspend six weeks of warfare between the US, Israel and Iran. He said the talks would include Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>Hezbollah echoed the imminent truce and claimed the group were \u201con the threshold of a major historic victory\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But shortly afterwards this was contradicted by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said the ceasefire did not apply to Lebanon, and vowed Israeli military would continue operations against the militant group.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to\u00a0<em>The Independent<\/em>, Israeli military spokesperson LTC Nadav Shoshani said the military was following those orders, bombing dozens of targets including Hezbollah and Iranian military infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Lebanon we are continuing our operations against Hezbollah. That\u2019s the current situation right now, in the current guidance we\u2019ve received [from the political echelon],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have different plans for different scenarios. As of now, the mission remains to push back [Hezbollah] and keep degrading it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lt Col Shoshani claimed the operation was the result of \u201cmeticulous planning over weeks\u201d and that among the areas hit were Hezbollah headquarters, its firepower and its aerial units.<\/p>\n<p>But many of the strikes hit densely packed civilian neighbourhoods not affiliated with Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p>Medics said hospitals were overwhelmed by the wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from a medical centre in Beirut, Ghassan Abu Sittah, renowned British-Palestinian surgeon who has treated the wounded in Gaza and Lebanon, called Israel\u2019s unprecedented bombardment \u201can absolute massacre\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmergency departments have been flooded across the whole of Beirut. We had the first wave and now we\u2019re getting the second wave of people being dug out of the rubble. It\u2019s horrendous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people are being brought in dead, a lot of children with severe injuries,\u201d he told\u00a0<em>The Independent.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cIt\u2019s an absolute massacre and it happened almost simultaneously,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In Baalbek, meanwhile, Zainab\u2019s 20-year-old son Mahdi, who had also been rescued from the rubble, said they \u201cwere given no warning\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were feeling safe at home, assuming the war was over and waiting for a statement from the Lebanese government announcing it after the ceasefire agreement with Iran was announced in Washington,\u201d he said from his hospital bed where he had received stitches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the morning, we celebrated this news, and in the afternoon, Israel destroyed our house. My mother, father, and I were injured, while my sister and her young son, thank God, escaped with very minor injuries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Iran, the United States and Israel had agreed to a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday, an 11th-hour deal that headed off US president Donald Trump&#8217;s threat to unleash a bombing campaign that would destroy Iranian civilisation.<\/p>\n<p>Hours after the announcement, Israel bombed Lebanon and Iran and Gulf Arab countries reported new attacks on Wednesday, although it was not clear if the strikes would scuttle the deal.<\/p>\n<p>A source briefed on the Israeli position later told\u00a0<em>The Independent<\/em>\u00a0there was no intention of Lebanon being part of a peace deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reached most of our targets in Iran. We caused a lot of damage. We set Iran back several years. But now is the time to focus on Hezbollah,\u201d the source said, adding that Israelis are \u201cdisappointed\u201d with the ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael cannot run two huge battlegrounds simultaneously\u2026 It would be very hard for Netanyahu to sell a ceasefire with Lebanon at the moment.
