An adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Iran\u2019s nuclear weapon \u201cis called the Strait of Hormuz\u201d and that the waterway has unlimited potential to be used against the U.S., following a two-week ceasefire deal<\/a> the U.S. made with the Middle Eastern country.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Dmitry Medvedev (right), the deputy chair of the Security Council of Russia and the country\u2019s former president, wrote on social platform X<\/a> that it is \u201cnot clear how the truce between Washington and Tehran will play out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut one thing is certain \u2013 Iran has tested its nuclear weapons,\u201d he added. \u201cIt is called the Strait of Hormuz. Its potential is inexhaustible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. and Iran agreed to the deal Tuesday night, a few hours before President Trump\u2019s deadline for Iran to submit a deal<\/a> and reopen the strait or face further bombardment. Iran shut down the strait, a key passageway for crude oil, following the start of the conflict on Feb. 28, causing oil and gas prices to skyrocket globally.<\/p>\n

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday during a press conference that the U.S. will have a presence in the strait and be prepared for possible future operations, The Washington Post<\/a> reported. He lauded the military operation in Iran as a \u201chistoric and overwhelming victory<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran will also demand shipping companies to make cryptocurrency payments for oil tankers passing through the strait, the Financial Times reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran needs to monitor what goes in and out of the strait to ensure these two weeks aren\u2019t used for transferring weapons,\u201d Hamid Hosseini, a spokesperson for Iran\u2019s Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters\u2019 Union, told the Financial Times. \u201cEverything can pass through, but the procedure will take time for each vessel, and Iran is not in a rush.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vessels will have to email Iranian authorities about their cargo before they are informed about tolls they will pay via digital currency, Hosseini said. This is to ensure that transactions cannot \u201cbe traced or confiscated due to sanctions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump suggested that the U.S. and Iran will develop a \u201cjoint venture<\/a>\u201d to oversee a \u201ctolling system\u201d for vessels traveling through the strait. Though Iran established the idea of tolling the strait in its peace plan, with fees going toward its reconstruction, Trump\u2019s suggestion was not part of the deal.<\/p>\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio late last month blasted the idea<\/a> of a \u201ctolling system\u201d as \u201cillegal\u201d and \u201cdangerous for the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some of the accumulated fees would also be presented to Oman, though how the nation would use the funds is unclear.<\/p>\n

The ceasefire announcement and the reopening of the strait caused oil prices to plummet<\/a> Wednesday morning. The price of international benchmark Brent crude<\/a> dropped 14 percent to just more than $95 per barrel. The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate<\/a>, meanwhile, dropped down about 17 percent with trading at just under $96.<\/p>\n

The national average for gas in the U.S., however, remained high at $4.20 on Wednesday, according to AAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n
