The Pattern Begins Before the First Bomb

Wars like this do not begin with airstrikes. They begin earlier—through covert involvement designed to shape the internal balance of the target state.

Vietnam, early 1964:
Roughly 16,000 U.S. advisors were already embedded with South Vietnamese forces. Covert operations under OPLAN-34A targeted North Vietnam. American personnel were not formally at war—but they were operationally inside the conflict.

Iran, 2025:
Public reporting indicates Israeli and U.S. intelligence services were active inside Iran prior to the current war. Mossad encouraged protest activity following the June 2025 conflict, with reporting in The New York Times describing efforts to help “ignite” unrest. The Central Intelligence Agency expanded intelligence collection and recruitment networks.

Early in both Vietnam and Iraq, the United States was not yet fighting a war.

But it was no longer outside the conflict.

II. From Airpower to Exposure

Escalation followed quickly.

Vietnam:
• August 1964: Gulf of Tonkin → authorization for force
• March 2, 1965: Operation Rolling Thunder – air power — begins
• February 1965: Viet Cong attack at Pleiku kills U.S. personnel

Iran:
• June 2025: Israeli-US bomb Iran nuclear sites

February 28, 2026: U.S.–Israeli decapitation air strikes
• Immediate retaliation across Israel and U.S. Gulf bases (US troops killed)
• Sustained missile and drone exchanges through March

Airpower was supposed to restore control.

Instead, it created exposure.

III. The Escalation Mechanism

The mechanism is structural:

Airpower creates forward positions.

Forward positions become targets.

Targets require protection.

Protection requires ground forces.

This is not a policy preference. Escalation is a requirement generated by the battlefield.

IV. Vietnam’s Transition: What the Signals Actually Looked Like

The shift from air war to ground war in Vietnam did not occur as a single decision.

It unfolded through observable indicators over roughly six weeks.

Attacks on U.S. positions intensified
• February 7, 1965: Pleiku attack kills 8 Americans, wounds over 100
• Repeated strikes exposed the vulnerability of U.S. airbases

Mission expansion quietly changed
• Rolling Thunder began as signaling
• Quickly shifted to sustained, open-ended bombing

Defensive deployments were introduced
• March 8, 1965: 3,500 Marines land at Da Nang
• Official mission: defend the airbase

Logistics moved first—and expanded rapidly
Before Marines could be sustained, the United States faced a basic constraint: there was no logistics system in place for a ground war.

Ports were limited. Storage capacity was inadequate. Command structures for large-scale sustainment did not yet exist.

That began to change in the weeks surrounding escalation.

Airlift into theater increased. Runways were extended to handle higher volumes. Fuel and munitions stockpiles surged. Engineering units deployed to expand base capacity and prepare new logistics hubs beyond the congested Saigon corridor.

These were not background activities. Logistics and network growth were the signal.

The United States was not simply deploying forces. It was building the system required to keep them alive and operational under sustained attack.

Once that system began to take shape, the transition became difficult to reverse.

“Defensive” roles blurred into offense
• April 1965: Marines authorized for offensive operations
• By July: major troop increases approved

To be clear, President Johnson did not announce major US ground force deployments to Vietnam until July 28, 1965 – months after the Rolling Thunder air campaign began. On that day, Johnson announced in a nationally televised news conference at the White House that he had ordered an increase in U.S. forces from 75,000 to 125,000 immediately and confirmed that more troops would be sent to support intensified combat operations

By December 1965, U.S. forces reached 184,000.

The key point:
The ground war did not begin when troops landed.

It began when the system to sustain them was built.

V. Where We Are Now in the Iran War

The same signals are emerging.

Forward positions are under threat
U.S. bases across the Gulf have already been targeted repeatedly, with over 300 U.S. personnel wounded and at least 13 killed in the past month.

Airpower is active but not decisive
Strikes degrade targets but do not eliminate retaliation.

Forces are being positioned
~5,000 Marines now in theater. Elements of the 82nd Airborne deploying, including rapid-response infantry and command staff.

The logistics question is now central
Not whether forces can deploy—but whether they can stay.

This places us here:

between Rolling Thunder (March 2) and Da Nang (March 8).

The hinge. In Vietnam, that window lasted just six days.

VI. The Real Threshold: Stage 3 of the Escalation Trap

A small ground force is not stable. It creates a binary choice:

Reinforce it—or lose it.

Consider a plausible case:

U.S. forces seize a strategic node—an energy facility, an island, a chokepoint.

Initial success is likely. Sustainment is not.

Sustainment requires continuous:

fuel

ammunition

air defense

medical and engineering support

Iran will contest every supply route – Iranian missile and drone strikes have repeatedly hit U.S. facilities in Saudi Arabia and across the Gulf, including attacks on Prince Sultan Air Base within the past week.

Sea routes face missiles, mines, and swarm attacks. Air routes depend on large cargo aircraft operating into exposed bases. Once those flows are threatened, the logic shifts immediately:

To sustain the force, the United States must expand the system.

More defenses.

More escorts.

More bases.

Each step is defensive. Each step expands the war.

Pentagon announced late last week that 10,000 more US troops are preparing for the Gulf

VII. The Clock

Combat forces move in days. Logistics move in weeks.

To cross the threshold, the United States must build:
— pre-positioned fuel and munitions
— sustained airlift cycles (C 17/5/130s)
— theater command systems (82nd Airborne command staff just deployed)

These are observable. And they are beginning to appear.

As Wall Street Journal confirms: U.S. officials are now actively preparing contingency plans for sustained ground operations, including potential deployments of conventional infantry beyond current Marine and airborne forces.

Which means the timeline is no longer theoretical.

The next 10 days will show whether this system is being built at scale.

VIII. The Illusion of Control

At this stage, the most dangerous belief is that escalation remains optional. That one more step can stabilize the situation.

Vietnam suggests otherwise.

Once ground forces are committed, the pressure to reinforce them becomes structural.

No administration allows an exposed force to fail.

Commitment grows.

Incrementally.

Irreversibly.

IX. The Decision Window for Stage 3

The United States has not yet entered a ground war. But it is approaching the point where that option becomes feasible.

And once feasible, it becomes more likely. Because the constraint shifts:

from whether it can be done

to whether what has been built will be used

That is the moment to watch.

Not when troops deploy.

But when the system behind them is ready.

X.
