Officials at the World Health Organization have admitted that they are preparing for a \u201cworst-case scenario\u201d nuclear threat if the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran escalates.<\/a><\/p>\n

Hanan Balkhy, WHO<\/a> regional director for the eastern Mediterranean, said that staff remain \u201cvigilant\u201d for a nuclear incident following President <\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe worst-case scenario is a nuclear incident<\/a>, and that\u2019s something that worries us the most,\u201d Balkhy told Politico<\/em><\/a>. \u201cAs much as we prepare, there\u2019s nothing that can prevent the harm that will come \u2026 the region\u2019s way \u2014 and globally if this eventually happens \u2014 and the consequences are going to last for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official told the outlet that United Nations staff are preparing for an incident in \u201cits broader sense,\u201d including if there was an attack on a nuclear facility or the use of a weapon. \u201cWe are thinking about it, and we\u2019re just really hoping that it does not happen,\u201d Balkhy added.<\/p>\n

In the wake of the bombing campaign in the Middle East, WHO is \u201crefreshing\u201d staff on how to respond in the event of a nuclear incident and providing guidance about long-term health risks linked to radiation exposure, Politico<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think those who read the history of previous incidents, whether intentional or accidental, are very aware of what we\u2019re talking about,\u201d Balkhy added.<\/p>\n

Israel and the U.S. have continued to pummel Iran\u2019s nuclear sites as Trump insisted Tehran was on the brink of getting a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of \u201cOperation Epic Fury,\u201d which began on February 28, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair General Dan Caine insisted the goal of the operation is to eliminate Iran\u2019s ability to build a nuclear weapon, echoing the same line shared by Trump and the White House <\/a>when they launched the attacks.<\/p>\n

This week, Joe Kent, Trump\u2019s director of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigned from his post because he could not \u201cin good conscience support the ongoing war<\/a> in Iran\u201d and the country posed \u201cno imminent threat to our nation,\u201d he said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

In her opening remarks to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, Trump\u2019s Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard<\/a>, said that U.S. and Israeli<\/a> strikes on Iran last summer \u201cobliterated\u201d Iran\u2019s nuclear enrichment program.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere has been no efforts since then to try to rebuild their enrichment capability. The entrances to the underground facilities that were bombed have been buried and shuttered with cement,\u201d Gabbard\u2019s opening remarks stated.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency czar David Saks caused alarm Monday when he suggested that Israel could escalate the war \u201cby contemplating using a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president insisted that \u201cIsrael would never do that\u201d when asked about the comments later by reporters.<\/p>\n
