A negotiated deal between the United States and Iran to avert war \u201cappeared really possible\u201d, Oman\u2019s foreign minister who mediated talks between the two sides has said.

\nWriting in The Economist<\/a>, Badr Albusaidi abandoned the usual reserve of diplomatic language to call the war a \u201ccatastrophe\u201d and said Donald Trump\u2019s administration had \u201clost control of its own foreign policy\u201d.<\/p>\n

He mediated a second round of indirect negotiations that resumed in Oman on 6 February, with the final round held in Geneva on 26 February.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a shock but not a surprise when on February 28th \u2013 just a few hours after the latest and most substantive talks \u2013 Israel and America again launched an unlawful military strike against the peace that had briefly appeared really possible,\u201d Albusaidi wrote.<\/p>\n

The details of what was on the table in Geneva is of major significance, experts say, because Trump justified the war by saying Iran posed an \u201cimminent\u201d threat with its nuclear programme.<\/p>\n

Albusaidi blamed \u201cIsrael\u2019s leadership\u201d for persuading Trump that \u201can unconditional surrender would swiftly follow the initial assault and the assassination of the supreme leader\u201d Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the opening salvo of the war.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American administration\u2019s greatest miscalculation, of course, was allowing itself to be drawn into this war in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica\u2019s friends have a responsibility to tell the truth,\u201d he continued, adding that one of the messages \u201cinvolves indicating the extent to which America has lost control of its own foreign policy\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Guardian revealed this week <\/a>that Britain\u2019s national security adviser Jonathan Powell attended the final round of US-Iran talks in Geneva and viewed Iran\u2019s proposals as \u201csignificant enough to prevent a rush to war\u201d<\/p>\n
