Prof Robert Pape \u2013 Escalation Trap March 17, 2026<\/strong><\/h1>\n

In my interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, I made a simple point that cuts against much of the current commentary.<\/p>\n

The biggest mistake right now is thinking Iran is losing.<\/p>\n

By disrupting the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has already demonstrated an ability to impose costs on the global economy. That changes the strategic equation. The question is no longer simply what the United States can destroy, but whether it can reverse that disruption without triggering wider escalation.<\/p>\n

This is the escalation trap.<\/p>\n

What I did not have time to explain is that the conflict may now be approaching a more dangerous transition.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The escalation trap unfolds in stages.<\/strong> The first phase centers on strikes and counterstrikes. The second expands the conflict horizontally\u2014across shipping, infrastructure, and regional targets. The next phase is more consequential.<\/p>\n

Stage 3 is the turn toward ground forces<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If efforts to reopen the Strait intensify, pressure will grow for operations to physically secure key terrain\u2014offshore islands, coastal launch sites, and staging areas along Iran\u2019s periphery. These are not symbolic targets. They are locations that require sustained control.<\/p>\n

That shift matters because ground operations change the structure of the conflict.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They create fixed positions to defend. They increase exposure of forces. They open new avenues for retaliation. And they make disengagement far more difficult once commitments are made.<\/p>\n

This is where escalation pathways multiply<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Operations in the Gulf could expand into direct clashes on islands and coastal zones. Retaliation could extend beyond the immediate battlespace to regional bases, infrastructure, and partners. What begins as an effort to stabilize a chokepoint risks becoming a broader and more entrenched conflict.<\/p>\n

The purpose of analysis is not to predict a single outcome. It is to identify the pathways that make certain outcomes more likely.<\/p>\n

Right now, one of those pathways is becoming clearer.<\/p>\n
