US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated<\/a> on 5 February that Washington helped spark recent protests and riots in Iran by creating a US dollar shortage, leading to the collapse of a major and runaway inflation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we have done is created a dollar shortage in the country,\u201d Bessent said while testifying before the Senate Banking Committee on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt came to a swift and, I would say, grand culmination in December, when one of the largest banks in Iran went under. There was a run on the bank,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe central bank had to print money, the Iranian currency went into free fall, inflation exploded, and hence we have seen the Iranian people out on the street.\u201d<\/p>\n
