That the \u201crules-based order\u201d is, and always was, a lie (sort of). That US hegemony is bad and must end. That countries should be independent (but also not really).<\/p>\n<p>It is rambling and non-specific, alluding to ideas without declaration of a real position, save that the old way of doing things is over, and there\u2019s no going back.<\/p>\n<p>He sums this up with a closing line has a certain\u2026familiarity:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">we believe that from the fracture we can build something bigger, better, stronger, more just.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hmmm.<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway is that this is an <em>important<\/em> speech. How do we know that? Well, because <strong>everyone is saying so<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMark Carney is emerging as the unflinching realist ready to tackle Trump\u201d<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/21\/nostalgia-is-not-a-strategy-mark-carney-is-emerging-as-the-unflinching-realist-ready-to-tackle-trump\">opines the Guardian<\/a>. The New Statesman agrees, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/world\/americas\/north-america\/us\/2026\/01\/europe-has-a-lot-to-learn-from-mark-carney\">headlining<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Europe has a lot to learn from Mark Carney \u2013 Europe must learn that it is time to reckon with what the US has become<\/p>\n<p>On social media, everyone from Robert Peston:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Mark Carney: \u201cThe middle powers must act together. Wherever you get your pods <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jopDYX8RyT\">pic.twitter.com\/jopDYX8RyT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ALASTAIR CAMPBELL (@campbellclaret) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/campbellclaret\/status\/2013881238960910487?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 21, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fluffing Carney\u2019s supposed \u201crealism\u201d and \u201cintegrity\u201d has become the hobby of everyone who fancies themselves a liberal, and this clearly signals a shift in narrative.<\/p>\n<p>Even some who should know better are buying in, tempted to a mainstream agenda by Carney\u2019s (rather disingenuous) denunciation of the \u201crules-based international order\u201d:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">A central, decades-old prong of the propaganda machine of DC&#8217;s bipartisan foreign policy blob &#8212; as well as their stenographers in establishment media rags like The Atlantic and The Economist &#8212; is that the US nobly acts to uphold the &#8220;rules-based international order,&#8221; which they\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qBA6W54F4l\">https:\/\/t.co\/qBA6W54F4l<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/2013979446420619680?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 21, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t a new or even an unforeseen development, but rather the evolution of an agenda that has been plain for some time.<\/p>\n<p>In one of those mad MSM coincidences, just hours before Carney\u2019s \u201cimportant speech\u201d in Davos, Gordon Brown was expressing the exact same thoughts in slightly different words in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/jan\/20\/donald-trump-greenland-world-plan-leadership\">a column for The Guardian<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">As Trump menaces Greenland, this much is clear: the free world needs a new plan \u2013 and inspired leadership<\/p>\n<p>This column is, if anything, more explicit than Carney\u2019s speech, <em>\u201cThe idea that the liberal rules-based order can survive his presidency now seems complacent. This is a historic moment \u2013 and a time to act\u201d<\/em>, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Adding <em>\u201cThe real question now is whether the 2020s will be defined by the complete collapse of the order\u2019s already crumbling pillars and the atrocities accompanying it, or whether an international coalition of the willing can come together to build a new global framework in its place.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We know what this is. We have written, countless times, about the \u201cend of hegemony\u201d narrative and rise of new post-Imperial Global Order in its place.<\/p>\n<p>In short, in order to enter a utopian post-national world, the old world has to be broken down and the old system discredited.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why you\u2019ll have liberal marketplace of ideas flooded with vague semi-concessions to the brutal reality of the US empire.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s why you have Donald Trump strutting around the world stage playing the villain.
