Tehran would consider U.S. military facilities and Israel \u201clegitimate targets\u201d if it detects signs of an impending attack, Iran\u2019s parliamentary speaker warned.<\/p>\n

The remarks followed media accounts<\/a> that U.S. President Donald Trump had been presented <\/a>with military options for a possible strike on Iran, though no final decision had been made. Trump has warned Tehran that Washington would intervene<\/a> if protesters were killed in the ongoing demonstrations<\/a> across Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before,\u201d Trump posted<\/a> on Truth Social late Saturday, adding that the U.S. \u201cstands ready to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israel is on high alert<\/a> for the possibility of any U.S. intervention\u00a0in Iran, Reuters reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, Qalibaf also praised Iran\u2019s security forces for their response to recent protests<\/a>, applauding police and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, particularly its volunteer Basij militia, for having \u201cstood firm.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people of Iran should know that we will deal with them in the most severe way and punish those who are arrested,\u201d Qalibaf said, referring to demonstrators.<\/p>\n

Protests in Iran erupted in the final week of 2025, driven by public anger over the country\u2019s dire economic situation. They have morphed into open opposition to the country\u2019s clerical leadership.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has dismissed demonstrators as a \u201cbunch of vandals\u201d seeking to \u201cplease\u201d Trump. The U.S. president has threatened to hit Iran \u201cvery hard\u201d if they \u201cstart killing people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The protests were sparked by soaring inflation, and have spread to more than 100 cities and towns across every province in Iran. Now protesters are calling for an end to the clerical rule of Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n

With the internet restricted in Iran<\/a> and phone lines cut off, gauging the demonstrations from abroad has grown more difficult. But activists claim violence surrounding the demonstrations has killed at least 116 people, the Associated Press reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some 2,600 people have been detained<\/a>, according to the latest reports from U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.<\/p>\n

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Saturday said the EU stands \u201cfully behind\u201d the demonstrators in the country and called for imprisoned Iranian protesters to be released. \u201cWe unequivocally condemn the violent repression of these legitimate demonstrations,\u201d von der Leyen\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in a post on X.<\/p>\n

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola Saturday evening called for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\u00a0to be designated as a terrorist organization<\/a>\u00a0and for more sanctions to be imposed on the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n
