French President Emmanuel Macron is facing fierce pushback from conservative voices within France over his renewed drive to grant the state sweeping new censorship powers<\/strong>, Barron\u2019s <\/a>reports.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Macron once again raised the alarm<\/a> about so-called \u201cdisinformation\u201d spreading on social media<\/strong>, insisting that parliament grant authorities the ability to immediately block content deemed \u201cfalse information.\u201d As if the existing arsenal of censorship tools weren\u2019t enough, the left-wing president now wants to establish a \u201cprofessional certification\u201d system<\/strong> that would effectively create an official, state-approved class of media outlets\u2014separating those that toe the government\u2019s ethical line from those that refuse to do so.<\/p>\n

France\u2019s right-wing press has reacted with outrage,<\/strong> with Vincent Bollor\u00e9\u2019s Journal du Dimanche denouncing Macron\u2019s \u201ctotalitarian drift\u201d on free speech and warning of \u201cthe temptation of a ministry of truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bollor\u00e9-owned CNews and Europe 1 were equally scathing, with popular presenter Pascal Praud accusing the president of acting out of personal resentment, declaring the initiative comes from a \u201cpresident unhappy with his treatment by the media and who wants to impose a single narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

National Rally leader Jordan Bardella also delivered a blistering rebuke, saying<\/a> in a statement, \u201cTampering with freedom of expression is an authoritarian temptation<\/strong>, which corresponds to the solitude of a man… who has lost power and seeks to maintain it by controlling information.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bruno Retailleau, head of the Republicans in the Senate, echoed the warning on X: \u201c[N]o government has the right to filter the media or dictate the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an unusual move, the \u00c9lys\u00e9e account fired back on social media, posting clips of Praud and other conservative commentators under the sarcastic headline \u201cattention false information.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Wednesday\u2019s cabinet meeting, Macron insisted no limitation on free speech was planned and explicitly ruled out any state-issued media label, Barron\u2019s<\/a> said. \u201cAs the president of the republic noted at the start of the cabinet meeting, there is not going to be a state label, and even less a \u2018ministry of truth,\u2019\u201d Macron\u2019s spokesperson claimed.<\/p>\n
