A school in Caerphilly is shutting down after 250 students<\/a> and staff were diagnosed with flu. A school in Northern Ireland has got 170 students off sick.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s worse than Covid\u201d<\/a><\/em>, said one headmaster, to the likely delight of headline writers everywhere.<\/p>\n

This is all because of a very serious illness outbreak, and is not even slightly the knock-on effect of Christmas-eager kids and overly cautious parents taking advantage of official recommendations that anyone with flu-like symptoms should stay home<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the NHS is \u201cbracing\u201d for an \u201cunprecedented\u201d<\/a> flu season.<\/p>\n

The flu of concern is H3N2 \u201cSubclade K\u201d, apparently. It\u2019s \u201cunlike any strain of flu I\u2019ve ever seen\u201d,<\/em> according to a \u201cvirus-hunter\u201d in the Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t actually explain precisely HOW it\u2019s \u201cunlike any other flu\u201d, but they do point out something that will doubtless sound very familiar:<\/p>\n

\u2018Unfortunately, you can\u2019t distinguish H3N2 from other flu strains based on symptoms alone\u2014they all look and feel very similar.<\/p>\n

Another delightfully vintage line doing the rounds is that \u201cvaccines will save lives\u201d, but also they might not<\/a>. It\u2019s a contradiction constructed as a byproduct of the diverse objectives of propaganda.<\/p>\n

Internationally, mask mandates are back in Spain<\/a>, Japan is bracing for an \u201cearly flu season\u201d and the US is at panic stations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all very retro\u2026and a little bit funny. Especially when you actually read what the Japanese Institute of Health Security actually says<\/a> about \u201cSubclade K\u201d [emphasis added]:<\/p>\n

The risk of developing severe symptoms from Subclade K is no higher than other strains<\/strong>, according to JIHS. The institute also added that the new strain is not necessarily more contagious<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
