Russia could provide its most advanced\u00a0hypersonic missiles<\/a>\u00a0to Venezuela, amid frayed relations with the United States.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin claims\u00a0the Oreshnik missile<\/a>\u00a0is impossible to intercept and can carry conventional and nuclear warheads.<\/p>\n

Alexei Zhuravlyov, the deputy chairman of Russia\u2019s parliamentary defence committee, warned that \u201cthe Americans may be in for some surprises\u201d as he opened the door to a weapons transfer to Venezuela.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see no obstacles to supplying a friendly country with new developments such as the Oreshnik or, let\u2019s say, the well-proven Kalibr missiles,\u201d Mr Zhuravlyov told the Russian news website Gazeta.Ru.<\/p>\n

The Oreshnik missile, translating as \u201chazel tree\u201d, is\u00a0capable of striking any target across the European continent<\/a>\u00a0in under an hour if launched from Russia or Belarus, according to Moscow.<\/p>\n

Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, has insisted that the missiles are so mighty that using several of them in a strike with conventional warheads would be just as catastrophic as a nuclear attack.<\/p>\n

The Oreshnik was first used in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro in November 2024 in what Putin said was a reprisal to Ukraine\u2019s use of long-range weaponry hailing from the US and UK, including Storm Shadow missiles, to hit targets inside Russia.<\/p>\n

It is understood Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, the Venezuelan president, reached out to Putin personally to plead for military assistance\u00a0amid increased US military presence in the Caribbean<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mr Maduro<\/a>\u00a0asked for Russia to boost air defences, including restoring Russian Sukhoi Su-30MK2 aircraft already in Venezuela\u2019s possession and acquiring 14 sets of missiles, The Washington Post reported last week.<\/p>\n

In a letter to the Russian president, Mr Maduro reportedly said that the Sukhoi fighters were \u201cthe most important deterrent the Venezuelan national government had when facing the threat of war\u201d.<\/p>\n

Caracas also reached out to China and Iran to upgrade its military capabilities and expand defensive ties, according to the paper.<\/p>\n

The US deployment in the Caribbean Sea has been swelling for months as Washington dispatched fighter jets, warships, bombers, marines, drones and spy planes in a move that the US president claimed was necessary to sever\u00a0the flow of drugs into the US<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More than a dozen US strikes on alleged drug traffickers, most of whom departed from\u00a0Venezuelan shores<\/a>, have killed more than 60 people since September.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Maria Zakharova, the Russian foreign ministry spokesman, said that Moscow condemns \u201cthe use of excessive military force in carrying out anti-drug tasks\u201d by the US, reiterating its \u201cfirm support\u201d for Venezuela\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

Russia and Venezuela have celebrated close ties over the past two decades and signed a strategic partnership treaty in Moscow last year.<\/p>\n

Mr Zhuravlyov, describing Russia on Tuesday as \u201cone of Venezuela\u2019s key military-technical partners\u201d, said that it \u201csupplies the country with almost the full range of weaponry\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Putin announced that the Sarmat intercontinental heavy missile will enter Russia\u2019s combat service from next year.<\/p>\n

The nuclear missile, nicknamed Satan II, has been touted as the \u201cworld\u2019s deadliest weapon\u201d.<\/p>\n
