Jamie Dimon, the steady-handed chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, is sounding the alarm on America\u2019s economic outlook.<\/p>\n

The world’s most powerful banker fears the US might slide into a recession in 2026, even as the economy currently hums along.<\/p>\n

‘I hope for the best and plan for the worst,’ he told Bloomberg<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday. ‘You don’t wish it, because you know certain people get hurt.’<\/p>\n

Investors watch Dimon closely. Known for blunt analysis and JPMorgan\u2019s rigorous stress tests, his insights carry weight across industries.<\/p>\n

Right now, the US economy is not close to a technical recession. By definition, America would have to experience two straight quarters of declining economic growth and slowing job numbers.<\/p>\n

In July, the US economy grew by 3.8 per cent<\/strong><\/a>. Meanwhile, retail sales grew\u00a00.6 per cent<\/strong><\/a>, handily beating Wall Street’s expectation of just 0.2 percent.<\/p>\n

Despite the solid economic numbers, Dimon is worried about weakening jobs numbers, stubborn inflation<\/strong><\/a>, the impact of AI, and trade wars.<\/p>\n

America’s biggest problem could be the jobs market’s performance. In August, employers added an estimated 22,000 positions<\/strong><\/a>, missing Wall Street’s expectation of 75,000 roles.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, economists said federal data likely overestimated last year’s jobs growth<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by nearly a million positions.<\/p>\n

‘I am a little more nervous about inflation not coming down like people expect,’ Dimon added.<\/p>\n

After price increases dropped down to just 2.3 per cent<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in April, they’ve steadily ticked up as Donald Trump has introduced tariffs to the economy.<\/p>\n

The last reading measured inflation in grocery stores, at the gas pump, in clothing shops, and on car dealership lots at 2.9 per cent<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dimon also criticized the economic impact of government shutdowns.<\/p>\n

Lawmakers have decided to suspend government operations while fighting over plans to fund government spending.<\/p>\n

That has shuttered taxpayer-funded statistics departments that investors rely on, nixing this month’s jobs and inflation reports.<\/p>\n

‘Look, I don\u2019t like shutdowns. I think it’s just a bad idea,’ Dimon said. ‘I don’t care what the Democrats or Republicans say, it’s a bad idea.’<\/p>\n

This isn’t the first time Dimon has sounded the alarm about America’s financial standing.<\/p>\n

In January, Dimon said he was approaching the stock market with caution<\/strong><\/a>, as he predicted volatility in major stocks.<\/p>\n

Last month, he doubled down on his worries<\/strong><\/a>, saying the shrinking jobs numbers were proof that ‘the economy is weakening’.<\/p>\n

‘Whether it’s on the way to recession or just weakening, I don’t know,’ he told CNBC.<\/p>\n

He isn’t alone. Major investors like Ray Dalio,\u00a0Paul Tudor Jones<\/strong><\/a>, and Mark Zandi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 men who have predicted major economic downturns and can look under the hood of the American economy\u00a0\u2014 have voiced concern about a looming downturn.<\/p>\n

But, so far, Wall Street doesn’t seem to care.<\/p>\n

The three main stock indexes\u00a0\u2014 the Dow Jones Industrial, S&P 500, and tech-heavy Nasdaq\u00a0\u2014 have all been trading at record highs for the past month.<\/p>\n

The Nasdaq is up a full per cent at the end of the day on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
