At the start of the U.N. session on Monday, France and Luxembourg added their nations to the list.<\/p>\n<p>Both the French and British heads of state said that they decided to recognize Palestine in order to pursue peace. \u201cThe time for peace has come because we\u2019re just a few moments away from no longer being able to seize peace,\u201d said French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday before the U.N. A day earlier, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a recorded speech, \u201cIn the face of growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What Macron and Starmer failed to mention, however, is that they \u2014 and many of their fellow nations now pushing for Palestinian statehood \u2014 continue to supply weapons and military support to Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is leading an intensification of <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/collections\/israel-palestine\/\">Israel\u2019s genocidal campaign in Gaza<\/a> and an expansion of settlements and annexations of Palestinian land<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/08\/01\/awdah-hathaleen-killed-settler-yinon-levi\/\"> in the West Bank<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-868283\">responded<\/a> with\u00a0defiance to the statehood calls of Western nations: \u201cThere will not be a Palestinian state west of the Jordan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, a U.N. human rights commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/hrbodies\/hrcouncil\/sessions-regular\/session60\/advance-version\/a-hrc-60-crp-3.pdf\">concluded<\/a> that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. The commission\u2019s chair, Navi Pillay, said the international community is under the \u201clegal obligation to use all means that are reasonably available to them to stop the genocide in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet the nations whose leaders are calling for peace keep the flow of armaments moving.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Who Recognizes Palestine as a State but Still Arms Israel?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/09\/25\/palestine-statehood-israel-arms-sales\/\">Continues \u2026<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada, France, and the United Kingdom recognized Palestine as a state last week but continue to fund Israel\u2019s genocide in Gaza.
