{"id":315967,"date":"2025-09-28T06:50:44","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T06:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=315967"},"modified":"2025-09-29T06:30:50","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T06:30:50","slug":"more-than-1-6m-sign-petition-opposing-starmers-plan-for-digital-id-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=315967","title":{"rendered":"More than 1.6m sign petition opposing Starmer\u2019s plan for digital ID cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/kyriakos-petrakos\"><strong>Kyriakos Petrakos<\/strong><\/a><strong> \u2013 The Guardian Sept 27, 2025<\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">More than 1.6 million people have signed a petition opposing the introduction of digital ID cards after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/keir-starmer\">Keir Starmer<\/a> announced plans to make them mandatory for people working in the UK by 2029.<\/div>\n<p>The petition says \u201cno one should be forced to register with a state-controlled ID system\u201d, which it describes as a \u201cstep towards mass surveillance and digital control\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Petitions that receive more than 100,000 signatures are considered for a debate in parliament, but there is little evidence of their success in shaping government policy. More than 6 million people signed one calling for Brexit to be reversed.<\/p>\n<p>Digital ID cards presented \u201can enormous opportunity\u201d for the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/sep\/26\/keir-starmer-digital-id-cards-enormous-opportunity-uk\">Starmer said on Friday<\/a>, as the government grappled with a civil liberties row over the proposals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know working people are worried about the level of illegal migration into this country,\u201d the prime minister said. \u201cA secure border and controlled migration are reasonable demands, and this government is listening and delivering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDigital ID is an enormous opportunity for the UK. It will make it tougher to work illegally in this country, making our borders more secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He argued that the \u201cBrit card\u201d would offer ordinary citizens \u201ccountless benefits, like being able to prove your identity to access key services swiftly \u2013 rather than hunting around for an old utility bill\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Civil liberties groups have raised concerns over the proposals, with Silkie Carlo, the director of Big Brother Watch, warning the system would \u201cmake Britain less free\u201d and create \u201ca domestic mass surveillance infrastructure that will likely sprawl from citizenship to benefits, tax, health, possibly even internet data and more\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cIncredibly sensitive information about each and every one of us would be hoarded by the state and vulnerable to cyber-attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Addressing concerns over the government\u2019s use of digital IDs, the culture secretary, Lisa Nandy, said ministers had \u201cno intention of pursuing a dystopian mess\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, said her party would oppose any push by the government \u201cto impose mandatory ID cards on law-abiding citizens\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Reform UK leader, Nigel Farage, also criticised the scheme, which he described as \u201can anti-British card\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Writing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/politics\/2114026\/nigel-farage-keir-starmer-digital-id-plan\">the Daily Express<\/a>, he said: \u201cThe Labour government\u2019s plan to impose digital ID cards on all adults will do nothing to combat illegal immigration.
