It\u2019s always funny to see Covid in the news, and funnier still to see supposedly normal humans reacting to it as if it means something.<\/p>\n

An historical curiosity. Like seeing someone riding a penny-farthing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But a shocking number of these people do exist, a trip to Covid-twitter<\/a> will teach you that. There are, apparently, a surprising number of penny farthings still on the road.<\/p>\n

Maybe those Japanese soldiers who never realized World War II was over is a better comparison.<\/p>\n

Anyway, we have a new variant and a \u201cunique\u201d symptom to discuss. The variant is called XFG, nicknamed \u201cstratus\u201d, and the super unique special symptom?<\/p>\n

A hoarse voice.<\/p>\n

Yes, that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n

I shouldn\u2019t have to tell you that a \u201choarse voice\u201d is not<\/strong> a unique symptom. Literally any respiratory infection can make your voice hoarse, as can allergies.<\/p>\n

But what\u2019s funnier is that they\u2019re not even definitively claiming it is unique, to quote The Indy<\/a>:<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to repeat that, with some added emphasis:<\/p>\n

So, the totally generic symptom may or may not<\/em> be a sign of \u201cstratus\u201d COVID according to some<\/em> of the experts. Possibly. That\u2019s it, that\u2019s the whole the news.<\/p>\n

This comes fresh off \u201cnimbus\u201d (they decided to switch to clouds from Greek letters, I think to avoid the \u201cpi variant\u201d, but we\u2019ll never know), which had the unique \u201csore throat\u201d symptom. They tried to call it \u201crazor throat\u201d to be dramatic, but it\u2019s just a sore throat.<\/p>\n

Got that?<\/p>\n

Nimbus = \u201crazor throat\u201d<\/p>\n

Stratus = \u201choarse voice\u201d. Maybe.<\/p>\n

Lord help you if you get both. I mean, what causes a sore throat AND a hoarse voice? In the autumn. As the weather gets colder. And kids are going back to school.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m drawing a blank.<\/p>\n

And people \u2013 people that are allowed to drive and vote and dress themselves \u2013 will be running out to get their autumn boosters over this.<\/p>\n
