In the past 48 hours, the governments of France, San Marino, Luxembourg, Monaco, Andorra, Malta, the UK, Canada, Portugal and Australia have all announced their recognition of the State of Palestine.<\/p>\n

It is the greatest number of countries to make this move in the same year <\/em>since 1988, and they all did it over a long weekend.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Is it because, by total coincidence, the elected officials of all those countries decided they had been wrong for decades?<\/p>\n

Is it because the political pressure from a largely pro-Palestine public was too much?<\/p>\n

Is it because they truly want peace and believe this is the way to achieve it?<\/p>\n

Does any of that sound likely?<\/p>\n

In Italy, one of the global minority that has yet to recognise Palestine, we\u2019re told that mass protests over the weekend were \u201cdemanding action over Gaza\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In his address to the United Nations announcing the move, Emmanuel Macron said \u201cwe can no longer wait\u201d<\/em>\u2026but wait for what? He also repeated his call<\/a> for a UN peacekeeping force to be deployed on the ground.<\/p>\n

Israel has been happily colluding in its own bad guy image, with illegal strikes on Doha, the capital of Qatar, earlier this month and the alleged killing of 31 journalists in Yemen<\/a>. Not to mention the Israeli finance minister\u2019s gleefully evil declaration of a \u201creal estate bonanza\u201d<\/a> in Gaza when the bombing is finally over.<\/p>\n

Even the US is more shakily behind Israel than usual, with Donald Trump\u2019s administration publicly questioning their airstrikes on Qatar, and articles in the American press calling it \u201ccrossing a line the US can\u2019t ignore\u201d<\/a>. In his UNGA address just an hour or so ago<\/a>, Trump called for the Gaza war to end \u201cimmediately\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Economist published this piece<\/a> five days ago, headlining:<\/p>\n

America is falling out of love with Israel<\/p>\n

It was only last week that the United Nations commission officially found<\/a> that Israel was conducting genocide in Gaza, and the General Assembly endorsed a two-state solution<\/a>. Writing for the BBC, Paul Adams claims that their \u201cisolation is deepening\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Seems like the worm is turning, no?<\/p>\n

But to what end? Where does this story go from here?<\/p>\n

Macron\u2019s call for a UN force may be the key. Indonesia\u2019s president has claimed they could supply 20,000 \u201cpeacekeepers\u201d<\/a> if needed. In the US, house Democrats have called for UN peacekeepers to \u201cprotect aid convoys\u201d<\/a> (though they frame that as preventing the aid reaching Hamas, it\u2019s clearly the same agenda).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, EU Chief Ursula Von Der Leyen has pledged the creation of a \u201cPalestine donor group\u201d<\/a>, a special fund for rebuilding Gaza\u2019s infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Maybe a shiny new state is the goal. Pried out of Israel\u2019s grasp, policed by a new international brigade and rebuilt \u2013 with UN and EU money \u2013 into a model sustainable utopia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A shining beacon of international cooperation, maybe.<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t be surprised.<\/p>\n
