Town councillor John Edwards, who asked questions about 300 Afghans put up in a local hotel, was \u201creported to police for stirring up racial hatred\u201d, and has also been placed under \u201cinvestigation\u201d by a \u201cmonitoring officer\u201d at Bracknell Forest Council in Berkshire. The Mail <\/em>has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The elected councillor began asking questions in April, questioning whether the large number of new arrivals would affect local residents on the housing waiting list.<\/p>\n

But instead of getting answers, Councillor Edwards said he was accused of \u201cinciting\u201d hate and spreading \u201cmisinformation\u201d against an ethnic group.<\/p>\n

The Free Speech Union has now taken up his case, calling it a \u201cchilling\u201d example of democracy being suppressed.<\/p>\n

It has since been revealed there was a huge official cover-up with the Government obtaining a super-injunction to stop the public finding out it had a secret immigration scheme for thousands of Afghans.<\/p>\n

The Mail <\/em>revealed that, while the public was being kept in the dark, ministers were being warned in private their scheme risked \u201csignificant integration considerations\u201d including with housing and local services such as education and healthcare.<\/p>\n

But when Councillor Edwards \u2013 an independent member of nearby Sandhurst Town Council \u2013 began asking Bracknell\u2019s borough council a series of questions, he was reported to police by a borough councillor.<\/p>\n

He wrote a post on Facebook on April 9th saying: \u201cFirst of all, I want to make clear that everyone arriving on this scheme must be treated with dignity and respect. This is in no way blaming them, and they should be made to feel welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to question the fairness of the scheme and whether it would have any impact on local residents waiting for housing or other services, pointing out that \u201cmany of our own veterans remain homeless\u201d.<\/p>\n

A Labour councillor on the Labour-controlled Bracknell Forest Council wrote on a Facebook community group it was \u201cfar Right propaganda\u201d and added: \u201cThis has all been reported to the MOD, council and local police.\u201d<\/p>\n

Councillor Edwards \u2013 who never heard from the police \u2013 told the Mail<\/em>: \u201cThe council has fuelled a narrative that I\u2019m spreading hate and misinformation \u2014 despite my claims being true.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother councillor has said publicly they have reported me to the police for \u2018stirring racial hatred\u2019. This would be a serious criminal offence. It\u2019s stressful, it\u2019s potentially very harmful to my reputation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a way to smear and silence me, and it has a chilling effect which amounts to, \u2018disagree with the council and you will be call a racist\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
