Ukraine could soon bomb the heart of Russia<\/a> \u2013 on the request of Donald Trump<\/a> \u2013 if the US<\/a> provides long-range weapons, it is alleged.<\/p>\n

It is understood that the US president has \u2013 very privately \u2013 encouraged his Ukrainian<\/a> counterpart to step up attacks on Russian territory<\/a> and even hit Moscow.<\/p>\n

\u2018Volodymyr, can you hit Moscow?\u2009Can you hit St Petersburg too?\u2019\u00a0he asked Volodymyr Zelesnky<\/a>, according to sources cited by the Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to them, Zelensky replied: \u2018Absolutely. We can if you give us the weapons.\u2019<\/p>\n

Trump signalled his backing for the strategy, describing it as intended to \u2018make them [Russians] feel the pain\u2019 and force the Kremlin to negotiations, according to the two people briefed on the call that is set to have taken place on July 4.<\/p>\n

It followed Trump\u2019s conversation with Vladimir Putin<\/a> a day earlier, which he described as \u2018bad\u2019.<\/p>\n

Tomahawk missiles and precision strike cruise missiles with a range of 994 miles are some of the weapons on Ukraine\u2019s wish list.<\/p>\n

Just like Biden<\/a>\u2019s administration, Trump has been reluctant to deploy the weapons, citing Ukraine\u2019s potential lack of restraint.<\/p>\n

But the Republican\u2019s previously flourishing relationship with Putin has been rocky over the lack of progress in reaching a ceasefire deal, which seems to have tipped the scales in Ukraine\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n

Sitting beside Nato secretary general Mark Rutte in the Oval Office yesterday, he announced new weapons for Ukraine and threatened secondary tariffs of 100% on the buyers of\u00a0Russian exports, of which crude makes up a major chunk.<\/p>\n

The \u2018severe\u2019 tariffs would be put in place if the Kremlin does not agree to end the war and gave it a deadline of 50 days to implement a deal.<\/p>\n

During a call with\u00a0the BBC<\/a>, when asked if he was done with Putin, he said: \u2018I am disappointed in him, but I am not done with him. But I am disappointed in him.\u2019<\/p>\n

And when pressed on whether he trusts the Russian leader, he replied: \u2018I trust almost no one.\u2019<\/p>\n

Responding to Trump\u2019s threat, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said he does not care about his \u2018theatrical ultimatum\u2019.<\/p>\n

He said in a post in English on X: \u2018Trump\u00a0issued a theatrical ultimatum to the Kremlin.<\/p>\n

\u2018The world shuddered, expecting the consequences. Belligerent Europe was disappointed.\u00a0Russia did not care.\u2019<\/p>\n

Is Trump being deliberately provocative? The Kremlin will undoubtedly view the use of long-range weapons against Russia as an act of war, which it is. Will Putin exercise the same restraint that has exasperated so many Russian?
