Here\u2019s why."},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Kit Knightly \u2013 Off-Guardian July 3, 2025<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>A new report has just been published, urging the United Kingdom\u2019s government to <a href=\"https:\/\/airqualitynews.com\/health\/healthy-air-coalition-publish-a-blueprint-for-government-action-on-clean-air\/\">\u201ctake action\u201d on the country\u2019s air quality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time that the \u201cair quality\u201d talking point has hit headlines in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Back in June of 2023, during the Canadian wildfires \u201ccrisis\u201d, we saw <a href=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/2023\/06\/08\/how-canadian-wildfires-are-turning-climate-change-into-a-public-health-emergency\/\">warnings about air pollution<\/a>. Then last week, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/canada-wildfires-us-air-quality-b2764394.html\">repeated the story again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There was also the \u201cban gas stoves\u201d push, which evolved into a compromise to <a href=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/2023\/01\/12\/what-is-the-us-gas-stove-ban-really-about\/\">\u201cregulate indoor air quality\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then there was the <a href=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/2024\/12\/25\/this-christmas-in-the-new-normal-3\/\">\u201cwood-burning stoves cause cancer\u201d<\/a> and the call to ban them in the UK in winter 2024.<\/p>\n<p>And just a couple of weeks ago, as mentioned in the <a href=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/2025\/06\/23\/this-week-in-the-new-normal-102\/\">most recent This Week in the New Normal<\/a>, a different report was published warning about the UK\u2019s \u201ctoxic air\u201d, which Christ Whitty called <em>\u201cthe most important environmental threat to health\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In a brand new research paper, we\u2019re told that poor air quality <a href=\"https:\/\/airqualitynews.com\/health\/air-pollution-linked-to-hidden-heart-damage-study-finds\/\">is linked to heart disease<\/a>, in another, from just yesterday, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/airqualitynews.com\/health\/how-air-pollution-contributes-to-lung-cancer-in-non-smokers\/\">lung cancer in non-smokers<\/a>. Before that, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/air-pollution-linked-dementia-cases\">early on-set dementia<\/a>. Or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-07185-1\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the \u201cserious issue\u201d propaganda, there\u2019s the set dressing, the white noise fluff stories that sell the idea by treating it like an unquestioned assumption. Articles telling you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.which.co.uk\/news\/article\/12-tips-for-reducing-air-pollution-in-your-home-a4QbR7t7NNHQ\">how to improve our home office air quality<\/a>, the ten best bargain HEPA filters,<a href=\"https:\/\/vocal.media\/education\/enhancing-indoor-air-quality-in-your-home-workspace-top-5-recommendations\"> 5 easy tips to freshen your air quality at home.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You know the kind of thing.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanying this is a flood of \u201creviews\u201d (or rather, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/business\/technology\/tech-review-this-smart-air-purifier-may-be-a-pricey-option-but-youre-paying-for-quality\/a1492118757.html\">verbose advertisements<\/a>) for new \u201csmart\u201d air monitors, which are about to make a very short list of very predictable companies a LOT of money.<\/p>\n<p>In short, it has been apparent for some time that \u201cair quality\u201d was going to become a \u201cproblem\u201d requiring a \u201csolution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Enter this report \u2013 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyair.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/HAC-Policy-Blueprint-Report.pdf\">\u201cMaking Britain\u2019s air cleaner, healthier and better to breathe: A blueprint for government action on clean air\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But what kind of \u201cgovernment action\u201d are they talking about?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look and find out.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>New legislation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first \u201crecommendation\u201d in the report is a new \u201cClean Air Act\u201d, which they would dub \u201cElla\u2019s Law\u201d after a young girl who died of asthma in 2013 and was the first person to have \u201cpollution\u201d listed on their death certificate in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pro-tip:<\/strong> <em>Always<\/em> be suspicious of a law that uses someone\u2019s name like this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElla\u2019s Law\u201d would seek to make \u201cthe right to breathe clean air\u201d a protected right\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">[We are] calling for the government to put our right to clean air into UK law, ensuring everyone has access to this basic human right.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure what exactly that means, but I would imagine it would open up \u201cpolluters\u201d to charges of human rights violations and civil suits.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Permission to Propagandise<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the report, this new law should also [emphasis added]\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Apply the precautionary principle,<strong> prioritising health, even in the face of scientific uncertainty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Which, roughly translated, means it should take action for which there is no scientific backing, or is even contradicted by the science.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, these steps should\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Ensure targets are non-regressive. They may only be strengthened, never weakened.<\/p>\n<p>So, the law could set absurdly high standards for \u201cclean air\u201d (remember, in the previous report it was stated <em>\u201cthere is no safe level of air pollution\u201d<\/em>), which may even contradict scientific research, but they could never be lowered because that would be \u201cregressive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Further, the act would require the government to\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Deliver up-to-date and high-quality information about local air quality to the general public, in a way that accessibly communicates adverse effects on health<\/p>\n<p>Which is free license to propagandise and frighten people.<\/p>\n<p>Picture it, the government adds big red AIR QUALITY WARNINGS to the weather forecast, or sends them out as emergency notifications to everyone\u2019s phones. These warnings don\u2019t have to be accurate because of the need to \u201cexercise the precautionary principle\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanying health warnings could scream out \u2013 \u201cDanger \u2013 Poor air quality may cause you to explode and die\u201d, because the government is \u201cprioritising health in the face of scientific uncertainty\u201d, and they can\u2019t be 100% <em>certain<\/em> people <em>won\u2019t<\/em> explode and die.<\/p>\n<p>These warnings never have to be reversed or explained, either, because that would be regressive.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Banning solid fuel heating<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The most concrete action recommended in the report is a total ban on open fires, wood stoves, coal burners or other solid-fuel heating. They don\u2019t call it a \u201cban\u201d of course, they call it \u201cphasing out\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Phase out the use of wood burning stoves, open fires and other domestic solid fuel burning as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s not a \u201cphase out\u201d. The government can\u2019t \u201cphase out\u201d wood burners, as if they\u2019re stamps or five-pound notes, it is not in their remit. A \u201cphase out\u201d is passive, accomplished via inaction. Making it illegal for people to burn wood or coal in their homes is not a \u201cphase out\u201d, it is a ban.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulty of enforcing a ban, and inevitable unpopularity of such, is plain in their reluctance to use the word, but it is clearly one of the most important recommendations in the report, due to its relative specificity.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Indoor vs Outdoor<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The main focus of the report is indoor air quality. The emphasis on banning wood stoves and open fires, and warnings about the dangers of gas hobs vs induction make that clear. The word \u201cindoor\u201d appears 15 times in the text, \u201coutdoor\u201d only five.<\/p>\n<p>The foreword makes special mention of it, calling it <em>\u201ca growing concern\u201d<\/em> that is <em>\u201coften overlooked\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The report specifically recommends that\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The Government should develop a cross-government strategy to address indoor air pollution and clarify departmental responsibility for indoor air quality within government [\u2026] An indoor clean air strategy should include air quality standards aligned with WHO guidelines<\/p>\n<p>This jives with broader coverage in general, going back several years, from the aforementioned moves to ban wood stoves in the UK and gas hobs in the US.<\/p>\n<p>In February, the University of Birmingham<a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/air-pollution-levels-may-be-higher-inside-your-home-than-outside\"> was warning that<\/a> <em>\u201cAir pollution levels may be higher inside your home than outside\u201d<\/em>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/granthaminstitute\/news\/tackling-indoor-air-pollution-could-save-uk-up-to-40-billion-a-year\/\">London School of Economics<\/a> added that <em>\u201cTackling indoor air pollution could save UK up to \u00a340 billion a year\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In March, the Guardian published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/mar\/07\/cooking-gas-hob-indoor-air-pollution-uk-road-study\">an absurd story<\/a> claiming gas hobs\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Raise indoor air pollution higher than busy UK road<\/p>\n<p>To which there\u2019s only one response: I\u2019ll go into the kitchen and cook over the stove, you go into the garage and start the car and we\u2019ll talk about it in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the World Economic Forum\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2025\/06\/why-indoor-air-quality-must-be-a-global-health-priority\/\">recent article<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Why indoor air quality must be a global health priority<\/p>\n<p>But how can they prioritise improving our indoor air quality in line with WHO guidelines, if they don\u2019t know how bad our air is?<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, they need more data, and while the report remains rather vague on this point, the WEF article is much clearer\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Making indoor air monitoring more affordable and accessible:<\/strong> Monitoring indoor air quality is not easy and traditionally, has required expensive tools. Emerging low-cost sensors and smart internet of things (IoT) devices have proven a remedy. While the accuracy and reliability of new tools are still a question, given their early stage of technological evolution, they remain promising for expanding access to indoor air quality data and informing much-needed interventions.<\/p>\n<p>Smart air monitors. We should all have one, and let it report on the quality of our air to the government so they can \u201cinform much needed interventions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They are already normalising the idea, with articles like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c17wl5lkzy8o\">this one from the BBC<\/a>, where the author bought a smart air quality monitor, downloaded an app and just let it record all the data it wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Expect them to be required in all new-build properties soon enough, and huge grants for companies\/local governments that implement their use. That\u2019s why the market for these devices is expected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2025\/06\/25\/3105118\/0\/en\/Indoor-Air-Quality-Monitor-Market-Size-to-Hit-USD-9-38-Billion-by-2032-at-a-CAGR-of-8-09-Research-by-SNS-Insider.html\">hit 10 billion dollars in the next decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the goal, more data. They thirst for the stuff, they can\u2019t help it.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why they\u2019re so focused on indoor air quality. They can get all the outdoor air quality data they want already \u2013 and indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobilenewscwp.co.uk\/Operators\/article\/vodafone-signals-fresher-future-capital-breathe-london-upgrade\">they are<\/a> in multi-million pound <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.org\/press\/mayor-of-london-and-bloomberg-philanthropies-announce-2-8-million-joint-investment-to-expand-pioneering-air-quality-programme-breathe-london\/\">\u201csmart city\u201d monitoring schemes<\/a> \u2013 but they can\u2019t get at the data in your house without your permission.<\/p>\n<p>They are data vampires.
