The UN and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), responsible for standardizing sea names globally, continue to use this designation. While the US military has unilaterally used \u201cArabian Gulf\u201d in internal communications for years, this would be the first time a formal White House policy adopts the alternative name.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, when Trump first used the term \u201cArabian Gulf,\u201d then-Iranian president Hassan Rouhani urged Trump to \u201cstudy geography.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under US law, Trump can direct executive agencies to adopt the new name, but permanent changes would require congressional approval and could be reversed by future administrations. Legal experts note the renaming has no bearing on international maps or global consensus.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s visit to the Gulf region, scheduled for May 13\u201316, also follows a controversial domestic attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the \u201cGulf of America,\u201d which led to a legal battle with AP.
