India and Pakistan exchanged fire across their shared border on Wednesday in a major escalation, bringing the two nuclear-armed neighbours to the brink of war.<\/p>\n

At least 15 people were killed as the countries exchanged air strikes and heavy shelling across the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border dividing Kashmir.<\/p>\n

Earlier, India said its \u201cOperation Sindoor\u201d struck nine \u201cterrorist infrastructure\u201d sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, some of them linked to an attack by Islamist militants on Hindu tourists that killed 26 people in Indian Kashmir last month.<\/p>\n

Islamabad vowed to respond to what it called a \u201ccowardly and shameful\u201d attack launched by planes within Indian airspace \u201cat a time and place of its choosing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me say it unequivocally: Pakistan will respond to this at a time and place of its own choosing. This heinous provocation will not go unanswered,\u201d said a spokesman for the military.<\/p>\n

Islamabad said six locations in both Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir were targeted, and that none of them were militant camps. At least 26 civilians were killed and 46 injured, a Pakistan military spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

Pakistan said Indian missiles hit three sites and a military spokesperson told Reuters five Indian aircraft had been shot down, a claim not confirmed by India.<\/p>\n

According to Pakistani officials, the downed aircraft included three French-made Rafale fighters, one Russian-built Su-30 and a MiG-29.<\/p>\n

India has not yet commented on the Pakistani claims. If confirmed, the loss of five jets would mark the Indian Air Force\u2019s most significant combat losses in decades and would raise the risk of wider conflict.<\/p>\n

The Rafale jet is a recent addition to India\u2019s Air Force, part of a broader effort to modernise its military and reduce reliance on ageing Russian equipment.<\/p>\n

Prior to the latest hostilities, the Indian Air Force operated 36 Rafales.<\/p>\n

Just last week, New Delhi signed a deal with France\u2019s Dassault Aviation to purchase 26 more Rafales for the Indian Navy, in a deal worth 630 billion rupees (\u00a35.9 billion)<\/p>\n
