A reassuring message from a departing leader trying to bridge realism and optimism.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen years later, we now know what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>On April 29, 2025, the Tony Blair Institute published a new climate strategy paper titled The Climate Paradox: Why We Need to Reset Action on Climate Change.<\/p>\n<p>At first glance, it appears to be a critique of current Net Zero policies \u2014 admitting they\u2019re economically toxic, politically unpopular, and practically unworkable.<\/p>\n<p>But on closer reading, it reveals something much more significant:<\/p>\n<p>a polished blueprint for a global technocratic control system, built in the name of solving climate change through data, automation, and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Switch: From Public Sacrifice to AI Control<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Blair and his Institute are not abandoning Net Zero.<\/p>\n<p>They are reframing it \u2014 from a movement of public sacrifice to a system of top-down automation.<\/p>\n<p>The paper recommends:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Abandoning political targets and messy global summits (like COP)<\/li>\n<li>Replacing them with coalitions of major powers, guided by scientists, financiers, and engineers<\/li>\n<li>Deploying artificial intelligence to manage energy consumption across entire societies<\/li>\n<li>Scaling up carbon capture technology, not just to reduce emissions \u2014 but to create new markets and credit systems<\/li>\n<li>Redirecting global finance into tech-based solutions, bypassing democratic input entirely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What\u2019s notably absent?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Democratic consent<\/li>\n<li>National sovereignty<\/li>\n<li>Any reference to freedom or privacy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s a plan not to empower humanity \u2014 but to manage it.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Digital Identity in Everything But Name<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Though the report doesn\u2019t use the words \u201cdigital ID,\u201d the implication is everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Blair has spent nearly two decades advocating for biometric and digital identity systems.<\/p>\n<p>The vision in this report \u2014 AI-managed energy, carbon-based currencies, global coordination of behaviour \u2014 is impossible without a system to track, identify, and manage individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Which means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your energy use will be measured<\/li>\n<li>Your carbon impact will be calculated<\/li>\n<li>Your lifestyle choices will be assessed by machine logic<\/li>\n<li>Your access to energy, services, or money may soon depend on what your profile allows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This isn\u2019t climate policy.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the construction of a permissioned society \u2014 one that you don\u2019t vote for, but are born into.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>A Convenient Blackout<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Strangely \u2014 or perhaps perfectly \u2014 the Blair report was published just one day after a massive, historic power outage plunged Spain and Portugal into darkness.<\/p>\n<p>At its peak, 60% of Spain\u2019s electricity was offline.<\/p>\n<p>Cities froze. Trains stopped. Stores closed. Communication collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>The cause? Likely a grid instability linked to over-reliance on solar and wind \u2014 the exact problem Blair claims his AI-optimised systems can fix.<\/p>\n<p>Whether coincidence or choreography, the blackout was the perfect backdrop for a sales pitch:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cSee? The old system is failing. Trust us with the new one.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Controlled Collapse Narrative<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Blair is not alone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Donald Trump is attacking Net Zero from the right, calling it a disaster for the economy and energy independence.<\/li>\n<li>Kemi Badenoch and the UK Conservatives are now walking back climate targets, citing cost and unrest.<\/li>\n<li>Across Europe, support for green policies is collapsing under the weight of energy failures and rising bills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But here\u2019s the trick: this isn\u2019t a collapse. It\u2019s a handover.<\/p>\n<p>Blair\u2019s plan steps in as the \u201csensible alternative\u201d \u2014 not to abandon climate governance, but to make it automatic, algorithmic, and unchallengeable.<\/p>\n<p>The message is no longer \u201ccut back to save the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cRelax. You don\u2019t have to change anything. The system will change you.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Real Danger<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Blair\u2019s 2007 promise \u2014 \u201ctechnology will fix it\u201d \u2014 has finally been fulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>But not in the way anyone hoped.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t innovation that empowers people.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s technology as enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s infrastructure not to serve humanity, but to steer it \u2014 quietly, constantly, and without appeal.<\/p>\n<p>What was once a public mission has become a technocratic machine.<\/p>\n<p>And that machine now has a face.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Fleming<\/strong> is an environmental health professional by training and has also worked on the marketing side of a top Formula One team.
