U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced in a Cabinet meeting<\/a> on Thursday that the government has launched a \u201cmassive testing and research effort\u201d to determine what causes autism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He said the effort involves hundreds of scientists globally and will be completed by September. Once the environmental causes of autism are identified, \u201cWe\u2019ll be able to eliminate those exposures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

At the meeting, President Donald Trump responded, \u201cThere will be no bigger news conference than that.\u201d He added, \u201cIf you can come up with that answer where you stop taking something, you stop eating something, or maybe it\u2019s a shot. But something\u2019s causing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reporting on the announcement in the mainstream media framed Kennedy as a longtime vaccine critic who has put forward the \u201cdiscredited<\/a>\u201d and \u201cdebunked\u201d theory<\/a> that there is a link between vaccines<\/a> and autism.<\/p>\n

In a conversation with Fox\u2019s Martha MacCallum<\/a>, who said studies have shown there is no connection between vaccines and autism, Kennedy responded:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe studies that they did were very very narrow. They did about 17 studies and the Institute of Medicine, which is part of the National Academies of Sciences, said that 14 of those studies are invalid. And the biggest weakness of those studies is that they never studied vaccinated versus unvaccinated<\/a>, which is the only way that you can really make this determination.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut more importantly, none of the vaccines that are given to children within the first six months of life were ever studied.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kennedy said the autism study, coordinated through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is not focused exclusively on vaccines. \u201cEverything is on the table \u2014 our food system, our water, our air \u2014 we will find out what\u2019s triggering this epidemic. We know it is an environmental toxin that is causing this cataclysm. Through research at NIH, we will find an answer to this question.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said that \u201cepidemics are not caused by genes\u201d and that although there may be a genetic vulnerability, there also must be an environmental toxin.<\/p>\n

In a post on X later that day, Kennedy reiterated<\/a> that thanks to Trump\u2019s Make America Healthy Again commission, \u201cWe\u2019ll soon identify the root causes of the autism epidemic.\u201d<\/p>\n
