Off-Guardian \u2013 April 6, 2025<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Our successor to This Week in the Guardian<\/em>, This Week in the New Normal<\/a><\/em> is our weekly chart of the progress of autocracy, authoritarianism and economic restructuring around the world.<\/p>\n

1. WEF\u2019s Klaus Raus<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Klaus Schwab, founder and leader of the World Economic Forum, is \u201cbeginning the process\u201d of stepping down<\/a> from his duties as chairman of the board of trustees. This \u201cprocess\u201d is apparently going to take until at least January 2027, so right there you have to wonder how real any of this is at all.<\/p>\n

But there is precedent, as this announcement follows on from his resignation as Chief Executive in 2023, a role he was succeeded in by Norwegian politician B\u00f8rge Brende.<\/p>\n

Now, while an 87 year old man (allegedly) retiring is not, of itself, newsworthy it does raise interesting questions.<\/p>\n

Such as \u201cwhy now?\u201d and \u201cwho is replacing him?\u201d<\/p>\n

As to the former, I would guess it\u2019s because Klaus is now tainted. He is too publicly associated with Covid and the \u201cGreat Reset\u201d. His presence immediately turns people off, his ideas are instantly suspected.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the same reason you don\u2019t see Bill Gates giving as many interviews as you did during Covid. These are the faces of the New Normal agenda, and as that agenda becomes more covert than overt the people who proudly nailed their colours to its mast need to be pushed aside so the greater work can continue.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not to say they are being actually rejected or their ideas repudiated, of course, just that their public association is damaging.<\/p>\n

In the latter case, one early rumor suggested Tony Blair would be taking the job, but (if my reasoning can be trusted) that was never likely. Replacing Schwab with Blair to reduce bad press is like replacing your toaster with a flamethrower so you don\u2019t burn your muffins.<\/p>\n

Other potential replacements include the other members of the board \u2013 Christine Lagarde of the ECB, Kristalina Georgieva of the IMF, Larry Fink of BlackRock, Marc Benioff of Salesforce and Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries.<\/p>\n

But they largely have the same issue as Blair \u2013 namely, they are creepy and everyone hates them.<\/p>\n

I would suspect that a good portion of the next 18 months of \u201cstepping down process\u201d will be spent holding auditions for some bland-faced Trudeau-like \u201cnice guy\u201d type who can say all the same things Uncle Klaus used to say, without looking and sounding like a Bond villain.<\/p>\n

2. Background Bird Flu<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Tariffs and Trump and trade are taking up the headlines right now, with online censorship and Adolescence rushing to fill any gaps.<\/p>\n

Behind that, the now-familiar strains of music still play on a loop. Digital currency this, Covid that and \u2013 among other things \u2013 Bird Flu.<\/p>\n

Mexico\u2019s Health Ministry recorded its first official human case of Bird Flu this week, according to Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n

In India, it\u2019s being reported that a two-year-old child died<\/a> of bird flu after eating raw chicken. The details are unclear, but on the face of it that story makes no sense.<\/p>\n

In England, DEFRA have ordered stricter measures be put in place in the north after more cases of H5N1 were allegedly found in wild birds.<\/p>\n

The Conversation warns<\/a> that bird flu \u201ccould be on the cusp of transmitting between humans\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s some background noise building. Just in time for an Easter \u2013 or post-Easter \u2013 scare maybe?<\/p>\n

3. Having Children is bad and terrible and really eats into your \u201cme time\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I\u2019m not a monster, screams the headline<\/a>, but I regret having children:<\/p>\n

And you know what, fine. Maybe regretting having children doesn\u2019t make you a monster, but writing an article about it that your children will likely one day see, does.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s just taking the story at face value.<\/p>\n

The author is anonymous, the names apparently made up, so maybe the whole thing is just a piece of propaganda attacking the idea of having a family.<\/p>\n

BONUS: Red Flag Interview of the week<\/strong><\/h2>\n

We\u2019re all more than used to the \u201cfree speech is hurting our kids!\u201d argument; there\u2019s always someone somewhere mewling out some variation.<\/p>\n

This week that someone is Ian Russell, an \u201conline safety campaigner\u201d, and the somewhere is BBC Newsnight:<\/p>\n
