News Brief \u2013 July 22, 2011<\/h3>\n

A powerful double\u00a0explosion rocked central Oslo on Friday afternoon blowing out the windows of several government buildings, including the office of the Norwegian prime minister.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>A shooting on an island 25 miles from the city followed the blasts in central Oslo.<\/span><\/p>\n

As many as eighty are now feared dead.<\/span><\/p>\n

Right on cue however, the corporate media were quickly\u00a0suggesting the<\/span> involvement of radical Islam in the Oslo bombing<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though no one had yet claimed responsibility the media was already suggesting that the blame lay with\u00a0Muslim extremists. According to the Independent\u2019s Jerome Taylor<\/span><\/strong><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the worldview of Islamist militants, Norway is a minor member of the international \u201cJewish-Crusader\u201d alliance spearheading the invasion and subjugation of Muslim lands. But although it was on al-Qa\u2019ida\u2019s hit list it was never viewed as a high priority target.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That has obviously changed and now Norway has become a target for terrorism, carried out The Independent infers, by radical Muslims.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact the groundwork for this bombing and who to blame\u00a0may have\u00a0already been laid the week before. When terror charges were filed against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he is deported from the Scandinavian country.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The indictment focused on statements by Mullah Krekar \u2014 the founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam \u2014 to various news media, including the U.S. network NBC.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the explosions damaged nearby government buildings and occurred near the prime minister\u2019s office, a spokesman said Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg was \u201csafe and unhurt\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

So no big surprise there, the prime minister having been at home when the blast occurred.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortly after the Oslo blast a man dressed as a policeman opened fire at the Labour Party Youth Camp on northern Utoya Island. Witnesses\u00a0said the camp was a scene of utter chaos and that many had been shot. The BBC later carried unconfirmed reports that as many as ten people had been shot<\/span><\/p>\n

A man was reportedly arrested at the scene and he has since been linked by police to the Oslo bombing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Little is known about the man\u2019s identity beyond Norway\u2019s justice minister saying he was \u201cnot Norwegian\u201d, at a press conference Friday evening.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the BBC has suggested that the bombing marks an \u201c<\/span>end of innocence for Norway<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u201d.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In the words of the BBC’s security correspondent: “<\/strong>An al-Qaeda linked group is still a strong possibility, based on opposition to the role of Norwegian forces or issues linked to the publication of cartoons of the prophet.”<\/span><\/p>\n

True to form the Corporation also claims that the bombing \u201cwill mark a 9\/11 moment\u201d for the country.
