One of them, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station, is the largest plant in Europe and has been under Russian occupation since March 2022. Russia, for its part, has 37 reactors divided among 11 power plants.<\/p>\n<p>If all or even some of these reactors were attacked and destroyed simultaneously, the destructive impact would be beyond calculation. The Chernobyl nuclear accident that occurred in Ukraine in 1986, and which remains the worst disaster involving nuclear energy in history, killed dozens and led to long-term health problems for thousands of others. In a scenario where several nuclear plants were destroyed simultaneously, it would likely exceed the ability of any nation to bring it under control. Click to enlarge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nor would this catastrophe be limited to Ukraine and Russia: Harmful radioactivity would undoubtedly be carried by the atmosphere and spread over the rest of Europe as well.<\/p>\n<p>Arestovych raised the alleged plan in the context of U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s suggestion that Ukraine\u2019s nuclear reactors should be brought under American control. The White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c62k1w7z5rro\">reported<\/a> that the president had proposed the idea to Zelensky in a phone call they had last month, arguing that this would offer the \u201cbest protection\u201d for the country\u2019s nuclear energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>While some accused the American president of wanting to seize control of Ukraine\u2019s energy resources for his own country\u2019s benefit, Arestovych asserted that the real reason was that Washington knows about Budanov\u2019s apocalyptic plan. He said that the Trump administration sees the Ukrainian government as \u201capes with a grenade\u201d and wants to \u201ctake these dangerous toys out of our control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know about our plans to blow up all the nuclear power plants if Ukraine starts losing,\u201d Arestovych said. \u201cBudanov was running around with this [idea] a year and a half ago. The U.S. Republicans, he says, prefer a more direct approach.<\/p>\n<p>Arestovych also alluded to the efforts of Ukrainian banker Oleh Gorokhovsky to <a href=\"https:\/\/english.nv.ua\/nation\/ukrainians-to-donate-massively-to-nuclear-weapons-after-zelenskyy-trump-dispute-50494286.html\">raise funds<\/a> for a nuclear weapons program for the country following Trump\u2019s explosive clash with Zelensky in the Oval Office last month. His fundraiser brought in more than half a million euros.<\/p>\n<p>Originally a military officer, Arestovych predicted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DwcwGSFPqIo\">video interview<\/a> that he gave in 2019 that Russia would attack Ukraine between 2020 and 2022, and that the resulting war would be used as a pretext for Ukraine joining NATO. In January 2023, he claimed that what the Ukrainian government said was a deliberate Russian attack on a residential complex was in fact the result of an error by Ukraine\u2019s own air defense forces. This angered many and he resigned from his position the same month.<\/p>\n<p>Arestovych has continued to comment publicly on the war and has been critical of Zelensky\u2019s handling of it. He eventually left Ukraine out of fear of being arrested.
