President Donald Trump signaled on Friday that the United States has no choice but to acquire Greenland from Denmark for national security reasons.<\/p>\n

The president doubled down on his push for the island nation while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office \u2014 just a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Trump was dead serious about taking over the island.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need Greenland very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a question of, \u2018Do you think we can do without it?\u2019 We can\u2019t. If you look at Greenland right now, if you look at the waterways, you have Chinese and Russian ships all over the place, and we\u2019re not going to be able to do that. We\u2019re not relying on Denmark or anybody else to take care of that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we\u2019re not talking about peace for the United States,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019re talking about world peace. We\u2019re talking about international security. And right now, you look at it, you have warships all over the place going through right along Greenland. We\u2019re not going to let that happen. We cannot let that happen, or if it\u2019s going to happen, we have to be protective of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president said that \u201cmodern day weaponry\u201d made Greenland \u201cvery important\u201d from a strategic defense standpoint.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you notice, also some of those, you could call them roadways, they\u2019re water roadways, but some of those areas are opening up and they\u2019re opening up,\u201d he said. \u201cIce breakers out there, they\u2019re opening them. And by just nature, they\u2019re opening up and they\u2019re headed right into China, right into Russia, and we have no choice.\u201d<\/p>\n
