A Pennsylvania city worker was accused Monday of staging a fake \u201chate crime\u201d after she allegedly planted a noose at her own desk, according to police.<\/p>\n

Allentown City Hall employee LaTarsha Brown was charged with a pair of criminal counts after DNA pulled from the noose only belonged to her, authorities said \u2014 though one of her pals claims she\u2019s innocent.<\/p>\n

Brown initially said she made the shocking discovery at her desk on Jan. 10 when she arrived for work \u2014 leading to an investigation and a community protest.<\/a><\/p>\n

Allentown City Councilwoman Ce-Ce Gerlach said at the time she was \u201cirate\u201d and \u201cangry\u201d over what she called a \u201chate crime,\u201d the Morning Call reported at the time.<\/a><\/p>\n

During the investigation, every employee who could have placed the noose on the desk was asked to submit their DNA, Capt. Steve Milkovits said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery employee agreed, except for Ms. Brown,\u201d he said during a press conference streamed by Fox 29. <\/a>\u201cInitially cooperative, Ms. Brown requested that the investigation be discontinued.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brown\u2019s DNA was finally obtained via a court order later in January and it matched up with DNA found on the inner knotted portion and outer surface of the noose, he said.<\/p>\n

She also allegedly made \u201cvague statements and gave deceptive answers\u201d to police during the investigation, according to an affidavit obtained by the Morning Call.<\/a><\/p>\n

Brown faces misdemeanor charges of making a false report and tampering with evidence.<\/p>\n

Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk called the charges \u201cshocking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s doubly shocking that an employee would \u2014 that she would have fabricated this incident,\u201d Tuerk told the news outlet.<\/p>\n

Police declined to explain what Brown\u2019s possible motive could have been.<\/p>\n

Brown is also on the Allentown School District school board.<\/p>\n

A friend of hers told CBS Philadelphia<\/a> the criminal case against the city employee was \u201cretaliation\u201d and that Brown had admitted to touching the noose.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not just an attack on LaTarsha. This is a warning to anyone in Allentown who dares to stand up against injustice. This is a smear campaign. This is retaliation,\u201d community organizer Josie Lopez stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut let me be clear: LaTarsha Brown is innocent. LaTarsha Brown deserves justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am calling on the people of Allentown, the media, and everyone who believes in justice to stand with LaTarsha,\u201d she added. \u201cWe will not be silent.\u201d<\/p>\n
