The Israeli cabinet has voted unanimously to fire the head of the regime\u2019s Shin Bet internal spy agency Ronen Bar, triggering backlash from opposition political groups and figures against the move.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the cabinet that he had lost faith in Bar following the\u00a0surprise operation\u00a0by Hamas and other Gaza-based resistance groups inside Israeli settlements\u00a0on October 7, 2023.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu added that Bar is \u201csoft\u201d and \u201cnot the right person to rehabilitate” Shin Bet,\u00a0according to a statement from the premier\u2019s office.\u00a0\u201cHe had a soft approach and was not aggressive enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

The decision to sack Bar marks the first time Israel\u00a0has fired a Shin Bet chief.<\/p>\n

The Shin Bet\u2019s chief\u2019s final day in office will be on April 10 unless a successor is appointed before then.<\/p>\n

Various Israeli opposition parties, including Yesh Atid led by former prime minister Yair Lapid, urged the regime’s supreme court to seek intervention in\u00a0Bar’s dismissal.<\/p>\n

They say Netanyahu is looking to consolidate his personal grip over Israeli institutions, and also obstruct a Shin Bet investigation into his\u00a0aides who have been accused of security breaches, including leaking classified documents to foreign media outlets and taking money from Qatar.<\/p>\n

They say the decision to fire Bar was only\u00a0taken after a Shin Bet investigation regarding the failure to prevent Operation Al-Aqsa Flood \u201cclearly pointed to the political echelon\u2019s responsibility for the catastrophe.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Friday, the Israeli supreme court suspended the cabinet\u2019s decision to dismiss the\u00a0Shin Bet and the attorney general said the prime minister cannot name a new spy chief.<\/p>\n

The dismissal\u00a0sparked protests across the occupied territories.<\/p>\n

Bar, in a letter to the Israeli cabinet, said the lack of trust between him and Netanyahu emanates from the management of the Gaza ceasefire and negotiations over exchange of Israeli captives for Palestinian prisoners.<\/p>\n

Bar also pushed for a commission of inquiry into Hamas\u2019s attack on October 7, 2023, which Netanyahu has consistently attempted to block.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu is reportedly also advancing efforts to remove Israel\u2019s attorney general Gali Baharav-Miara, who stood against Bar\u2019s dismissal.<\/p>\n

Analysts and political experts believe that the dismissal of Bar signifies growing tension and mistrust between Netanyahu and the Israeli security and judicial bodies.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis rift is getting worse and, in the end, I fear, it will be like a train that goes off the tracks and plunges into a chasm, causing a civil war,\u201d\u00a0former supreme court chief Aharon Barak said\u00a0in an interview with\u00a0Ynet news website.<\/p>\n

The discharge also follows the Tel Aviv regime\u2019s obstruction of the Gaza ceasefire deal, and the return to the bloody onslaught against the besieged coastal sliver.<\/p>\n
