Some correspondents estimated that there are thousands dead and wounded, <strong>mostly Alawites but also Syrian Christians among them<\/strong>, as post-Assad Syria unravels under Hayat Tahrir al-Sham&#8217;s (HTS) Jolani.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The death toll from\u00a0two days of clashes\u00a0between Syrian security forces and loyalists of\u00a0ousted President Bashar Assad\u00a0and revenge killings that followed has risen to more than 1,000, a war monitoring group said Saturday, making it <strong>one of the deadliest acts of violence since Syria\u2019s conflict began <\/strong>14 years ago,&#8221; The Associated Press reports.<\/p>\n<p>The jihadists, which include foreign fighters as well as ruling HTS members, in some cases are simply going into the homes of non-Sunnis and <em><strong>massacring whole families<\/strong><\/em>. <strong>The terrorists haven&#8217;t been shy about <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hassan1994\/status\/1898440431949763039\">uploading their killings<\/a> on the internet as well as in livestreams<\/strong>. <strong>Men, women, children, and even babies are being brutally murdered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">More on the jihadist terrorist regime&#8217;s massacres of Alawite families<br \/>\n&#8220;The attack was swift and merciless. Last words to me of a priest in Damascus while we sat on Straight Street: &#8220;We are a church of martyrs &amp; we will stay.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Syria?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Syria<\/a> is home. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JsjacQwNJO\">https:\/\/t.co\/JsjacQwNJO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brad Hoff (@BradRHoff) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BradRHoff\/status\/1898531242213089370?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 9, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/uk-lifts-restrictions-syrias-central-bank-landmark-move\"><em>As Middle East Eye explained earlier<\/em><\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0UK\u00a0has lifted sanctions on 24 Syrian entities, including the\u00a0central bank, in a landmark move that could be a turning point for Syria&#8217;s devastated economy. <strong>Britain has become the first country to unfreeze all assets of the Central Bank of Syria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The state airline and state-owned oil companies are amongst other previously sanctioned entities removed from the sanctions list on Thursday afternoon. &#8220;This approach underscores our commitment to help the people of Syria rebuild their country and economy, including through support for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition process,&#8221; a UK government spokesperson said.\u00a0 &#8220;We will continue to judge Syria\u2019s interim authorities by their actions, not their words.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new Syrian government inherited a daunting economic crisis from Bashar al-Assad&#8217;s government, which was toppled in December.<\/p>\n<p>Government corruption, devastating conflict and crippling international sanctions all contributed to wrecking Syria&#8217;s economy under Assad.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysabah.com\/politics\/diplomacy\/ankara-london-discuss-syrias-future-sanctions\">According to<\/a>\u00a0the UN, nine out of 10 Syrians live in poverty.<\/p>\n<p>On December 17, interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa [al-Qaeda name:\u00a0Abu Mohammad al-Jolani]\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/jolani-meets-uk-diplomats-urges-britain-lift-sanctions-syria\">urged<\/a>\u00a0Britain and other countries to lift all the sanctions that had been imposed on the country\u00a0under Assad.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They should lift all restrictions which were imposed on the flogger and the victim. The flogger is gone now. This issue is not up for negotiation,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8216;Desperately needs a boost&#8217;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The UK&#8217;s major policy shift could bring new opportunities for Syria, if other nations follow suit.\u00a0Western countries lifting sanctions could help stabilise the Syrian economy and facilitate foreign investment.<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian government is led by the Hay\u2019at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which <strong>remains\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/Western%20countries%20lifting%20sanctions%20could%20help%20stabilise%20the%20Syrian%20economy%20and%20facilitate%20foreign%20investment.\">proscribed<\/a>\u00a0terrorist organization in the UK, as well as in the US<\/strong>. Western countries have lifted some sanctions, but have made sanctions relief contingent on political reforms.<\/p>\n<p>In February the European Union partially removed restrictions on the central bank and suspended sanctions on the energy and transport sectors.\u00a0The US waived a ban on transactions with the Syrian government, facilitating humanitarian aid &#8211; but has kept sanctions in place.<\/p>\n<p>As long as US sanctions remain, the material impact of Britain&#8217;s move will\u00a0be limited. But the policy could be a turning point in encouraging other European nations to lift more sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>It is certainly\u00a0a bold decision from\u00a0the Labor government, which will be seen to be designing\u00a0its own Middle East policy, distinct from\u00a0that of the US.<\/p>\n<p>It comes just days after Turkey&#8217;s Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yilmaz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysabah.com\/politics\/diplomacy\/ankara-london-discuss-syrias-future-sanctions\">met<\/a>\u00a0Britain&#8217;s Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer to discuss Syria&#8217;s future, including sanctions and economic development.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Doyle, chair of the Council for Arab-British Understanding, said: &#8220;This is a belated if very welcome step by the UK.
