Donald Trump has said Ukraine \u201cmay be Russian someday\u201d as senior figures in his administration prepare to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky this week.<\/p>\n

Speaking as talk of a peace deal<\/a> ramps up, the US president also said Ukraine had agreed to give the US $500 billion worth of rare earth minerals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey may make a deal, they may not make a deal. They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday,\u201d he told Fox News.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told them that I want the equivalent of like $500 billion worth of rare earth (minerals)<\/a>, and they\u2019ve essentially agreed to do that, so at least we don\u2019t feel stupid,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Ukraine may be sitting on $12trn worth of untapped rare earth and critical minerals<\/a>, according to some estimates, though it would likely be several years before the US would benefit from such a deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to have all this money in [Ukraine] and I say, I want it back,\u201d the president said, suggesting that he is looking for compensation from Kyiv<\/a> for the aid given to Ukraine by the US.<\/p>\n

After Mr Trump\u2019s remarks, the Kremlin said a \u201csignificant part\u201d of Ukraine already is Russian.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that a significant part of Ukraine wants to become Russia, and has already, is a fact,\u201d said Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, referring to Moscow\u2019s annexation of four Ukrainian regions in 2022.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s annexation of Ukraine\u2019s Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts is not recognised by the international community, and Russian forces do not fully control any of the four regions.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump also confirmed on Monday that General Keith Kellogg, his special envoy for Russia-Ukraine, will visit Kyiv as he ramps up plans to end the war as it approaches its third anniversary.<\/p>\n

Gen Kellogg had been due to present the US president\u2019s plan to end the war<\/a> at the Munich Security Conference this weekend but has pushed plans back to give Europe a seat at the negotiating table.<\/p>\n

However, Gen Kellogg is still expected to discuss elements of the plan in Munich, including Mr Trump\u2019s proposal to exchange Ukraine\u2019s rare earths for continued military aid.<\/p>\n

Another central element of his plan envisages freezing the conflict along current lines, meaning Russia would retain control of around 20 per cent of Ukraine, mainly in the southeastern region of Donetsk.<\/p>\n

Senior members of the Trump administration are expected to visit Ukraine before the security conference, according to Mr Zelensky.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis week, some serious figures from President Trump\u2019s team will be in Ukraine<\/a>, even before the Munich conference,\u201d he said, according to Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian president also said he was \u201cworking on\u201d meeting Mr Trump, who said he would \u201cprobably\u201d meet Mr Zelensky in the coming days.<\/p>\n

\u2018Effective security guarantees\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n

JD Vance, the US vice-president, is expected to meet Mr Zelensky on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Friday.<\/p>\n

Mr Zelensky on Monday reiterated his calls for \u201creal peace and effective security guarantees\u201d for Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Sergei Lavrov, Russia\u2019s foreign minister, said Moscow was ready for talks \u201cin which our legal national interests are upheld\u201d.<\/p>\n

Vladimir Putin set out his plans for peace in June last year: Ukraine must drop its Nato ambitions and withdraw its troops from the entirety of the territory of four Ukrainian regions claimed by Russia.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump and Putin have reportedly spoken<\/a> about bringing an end to the conflict in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Russian president \u201cwants to see people stop dying\u201d, Mr Trump told the New York Post.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin declined to confirm or deny the call.<\/p>\n
