Anti-tank \u2018Hedgehog\u2019 barriers, modern surveillance systems and trenches \u2013 it is all part of Poland\u2019s fortification of its border<\/a> with Russia<\/a> over fears of a broader conflict in Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Worth around \u00a32 billion, \u2018East Shield\u2019 is the largest programme of its nature on the continent since the end of World\u00a0War\u00a0II<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It aims to fortify Poland\u2019s borders with Belarus, and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to deter Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u2019s imperialist ambitions.<\/p>\n

Prime minister Donald Tusk, who traveled today to inspect progress in the construction of the military fortifications, called it \u2018an investment in peace.\u2019<\/p>\n

Standing in front of concrete anti-tank barriers, he told a news conference: \u2018The better the Polish border is guarded, the more difficult it is to access for those with bad intentions.\u2019<\/p>\n

The country has been at the mercy of aggressive neighbors over the past centuries and has become a leading European voice for security at a time when France and\u00a0Germany\u00a0are weakened by internal political problems.<\/p>\n

Tusk\u2019s government aims to spend 4.7% of its gross domestic product on defence next year, making the country one of Nato\u2019s leaders in defence spending.<\/p>\n

Its borders with Russia, Belarus \u2013 as well as Ukraine \u2013 are the easternmost external borders of both the European Union and Nato.<\/p>\n

Tusk said he expected the East Shield to eventually be expanded to protect the small Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.<\/p>\n

\u2018Everything we are doing here \u2013 and we will also be doing this on the border with Belarus and Ukraine \u2013 is to deter and discourage a potential aggressor, which is why it is truly an investment in peace,\u2019 Tusk said.<\/p>\n

\u2018We will spend billions of zlotys on this, but right now the whole of Europe is observing these investments and our actions with great satisfaction and will support them if necessary.\u2019<\/p>\n

Poland is not alone in planning for a conflict in Europe. So far, Germany is drawing up \u2018bunker plans\u2019 in case of a bombing.<\/p>\n

It is developing an app to help people locate the nearest shelter in event of an attack.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Sweden is distributing a 32-page pamphlet titled \u2018In case of a crisis or war\u2019 because of what the government calls a worsening security situation.<\/p>\n

In neighbouring Finland, half a million people have already downloaded an emergency preparedness guide.<\/p>\n

And during the summer,\u00a0Denmark emailed adults with details on the water, food and medicine they would need to get through a crisis for three days.<\/p>\n
