This is what the Russian company Rosoboronexport said in a recent statement.

According to the Russian manufacturers, it is about deterring not only modern artillery shells and high-precision missiles but also the stealth aircraft of the US Air Force F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.

The Buk-M3 Viking represents the latest evolution of Russia’s long-standing Buk family of surface-to-air missile systems, and it signals a substantial leap forward in capabilities compared to its predecessors.

Developed by Almaz-Antey, this advanced platform is designed to neutralize a broad spectrum of modern aerial threats, including stealth aircraft, cruise missiles, drones, and even tactical ballistic missiles. It combines cutting-edge radar, missile, and command technologies to form an adaptable and highly lethal air defense network.

At the heart of the Buk-M3 system lies its advanced 9A317M launcher, equipped with six ready-to-launch 9M317M missiles. These missiles feature active radar homing and enhanced guidance systems, offering increased precision and the ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously.

Each 9A317M can engage up to six targets independently, a marked improvement over earlier Buk models. The system also boasts a maximum engagement range of up to 45 kilometers for cruise missiles and over 70 kilometers for traditional aircraft, with an engagement altitude reaching 35 kilometers. These characteristics allow it to cover a vast area and adapt to the highly dynamic nature of modern air warfare.

—

The Buk-M3’s radar suite is another key differentiator. The system features a multi-function radar capable of simultaneously detecting and tracking over 100 aerial targets. This includes low-RCS [Radar Cross Section] threats such as stealth fighters, which present significant challenges to traditional radar systems.

Reports suggest that the Buk-M3 Viking integrates an updated phased array radar, likely based on advancements derived from Russia’s S-400 and S-500 programs, enhancing its ability to detect and track low-observable targets like the F-35 Lightning II and the F-22 Raptor.

This capability is complemented by advanced electronic counter-countermeasure [ECCM] systems, allowing it to operate effectively in environments saturated with electronic warfare measures.

The mobility of the Buk-M3 is a critical asset in modern conflicts. The system is mounted on tracked chassis, ensuring it can operate across a wide range of terrains, including rugged and off-road environments. This mobility allows it to reposition rapidly, providing flexible coverage and making it harder for adversaries to target.

Furthermore, its modular architecture supports integration with other air defense systems, such as the S-300 and S-400, enabling a layered air defense network that enhances overall effectiveness.

Significant upgrades have also been made to the system’s command and control [C2] capabilities. The Buk-M3 employs an automated command center that processes data from multiple sensors and allocates targets to individual launchers based on threat prioritization.

This level of automation reduces reaction times and increases the efficiency of intercepts. The command center is also capable of linking with Russia’s broader Integrated Air Defense System [IADS], sharing target data across platforms, and creating a unified picture of the battlespace.

—

One of the most publicized capabilities of the Buk-M3 Viking is its purported ability to counter stealth aircraft. While Western stealth designs, such as those used in the F-35 and F-22, rely on a combination of low radar cross-section and electronic warfare to evade detection, the Buk-M3’s multi-band radar and networked tracking systems are believed to mitigate these advantages.

By leveraging data from multiple sources, including ground-based radars, airborne early warning systems, and even space-based assets, the Buk-M3 Viking creates a more comprehensive detection net, making it more difficult for stealth platforms to penetrate defended airspace undetected.

The system has also been designed with counter-drone capabilities in mind, reflecting a growing concern among modern militaries about the proliferation of unmanned systems. The Buk-M3 is equipped to engage small, low-flying drones that present low-RCS profiles, a testament to its versatility in combating a wide range of aerial threats.

Finally, survivability is a cornerstone of the Buk-M3 Viking’s design. Each launcher and radar unit is equipped with its own power supply and is capable of operating independently if disconnected from the broader system.

This decentralization makes the system more resilient against suppression attempts, such as anti-radiation missile strikes or cyberattacks. Additionally, the use of camouflage and decoy techniques enhances the system’s ability to survive in contested environments.

In summary, the Buk-M3 Viking combines advanced missile technology, cutting-edge radar capabilities, robust mobility, and integrated command systems to deliver a formidable air defense platform.

Source

With a combination of radars and new technology Russia’s new Buk-M3 Viking air defence system can overcome the stealth advantages of two of America’s foremost weapons: the F-35 and the F-22

[23,91

post-300126","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-Fringe_Science_New_Discoveries_and_Developments","category-russia
["GET
