The Israeli army is still going through a serious enlistment<\/a> crisis and is currently in urgent need of 7,000 recruits, Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth<\/em> reported<\/a> on 4 November.<\/p>\n

The newspaper said Israel is dealing with a \u201chuge shortage\u201d in the number of soldiers needed. According to the report, there has been an annual one percent decrease in the total number of male soldiers.<\/p>\n

Around 33 percent of males ordered to enlist have not shown up to recruitment offices in recent years, while 15 percent abandoned service and did not enlist in the reserves.<\/p>\n

The rate of exemption for medical and psychological reasons also surged from four percent to eight percent. The report says this is the most common reason for discharge during service.<\/p>\n

“There are 18,000 combat reserve soldiers and 20,000 combat support soldiers registered as part of the reserve force of the IDF units, and they do not join when called up,” the Manpower Division of the army is cited as saying.<\/p>\n

Brigade and Battalion commanders who were asked to deal with the situation have explained that the matter relates to \u201cserial desertions,\u201d and that recruits cannot be brought in \u201cby force.\u201d<\/p>\n

“The situation on the ground is difficult, as the Israeli army needs 7,000 recruits urgently,”\u00a0the report goes on to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe army claimed that it would be able to recruit 3,000 [ultra-Orthodox] Haredim (as of last August),\u201d but throughout the last recruitment year, \u201conly 1,200 were recruited out of about 13,000 candidates for service,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n

Recruitment of ultra-Orthodox Israelis into the military has become a highly controversial issue in Israel of late.<\/p>\n

For years, members of the ultra-Orthodox community in Israel who are undergoing religious studies have been exempt from military service through one-year service deferrals. In practice, the exemption has extended even to Haredi men not actively engaged in religious study.<\/p>\n

Tensions have ignited within Israel\u2019s political class and between the secular and religious in Israeli society, with many believing Haredi Jews must share the burden of military service. Far-right religious members of Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s coalition \u2013 who hold the highest number of seats \u2013 are in favor of drafting a law to codify the exemptions.<\/p>\n

The Haredi parties in Israel’s Knesset have threatened to block the passage of regular laws, including the general budget, until the law exempting Haredim from military service is enacted.<\/p>\n

Less than four percent<\/a> of the 3,000 Haredi Israelis who received recruitment orders since July to join the military have done so, Israeli army radio reported on 28 October.<\/p>\n

The shortages coincide with Tel Aviv\u2019s failed ground operation in southern Lebanon, in which it has incurred staggering losses<\/a> since early October. Israeli troops were forced out of the village of Khiam<\/a> on Saturday by Hezbollah fighters after several days of being unable to fully advance on and take control of the town.<\/p>\n

The Lebanese resistance group says it has killed<\/a> nearly 100 Israeli soldiers since 2 October.<\/p>\n

The Israeli army also continues to take losses in the Gaza Strip<\/a>, particularly in the north, where it is waging an ethnic cleansing and extermination campaign against the civilian population.<\/p>\n
