Rupert Murdoch has been forced to close the country\u2019s biggest selling Sunday newspaper, the 168-year-old News of the World, after the phone hacking scandal prompted advertisers to abandon it in droves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Meanwhile the scandal went from bad to worse for Cameron\u2019s government after his former communications chief was arrested on Friday on suspicion of bribing police officers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Andy Coulson\u2019s arrest put the spotlight uncomfortably on the government but it also brought attention to the incestuous relationship between government and media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The best Prime Minister David Cameron could do was damage limitation, as he struggled to defend his decision to employ the former News of the World editor as an aide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Although Mr Cameron admitted to &#8220;turning a blind eye&#8221; to questionable media practices, he said the ongoing controversy was a &#8220;cathartic moment&#8221; for both the media and politicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">More tellingly perhaps, Cameron also conceded that former the NOTW editor \u201cbecame a friend\u201d and remains so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The decision to close the News of the World\u2019s was taken because its name had become \u201ctoxic\u201d, former editor Rebekah Brooks reportedly told former NOTW journalist and now Sky News correspondent Sophy Ridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Such was the damage done to the newspaper\u2019s name that a number of charities including the Salvation Army and the RSPCA <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-14087518\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">rejected an offer of free adverts<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"> in the final edition this Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However, the damage to Murdoch\u2019s media-empire may be far from over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Murdoch-and-Rebekah-Brooks.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-29757\" title=\"Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Murdoch-and-Rebekah-Brooks.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"174\" \/><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">According to Sky News, Rebekah Brooks addressed staff for the second time in two days telling them there were more damaging revelations to come and that a year from now they would understand why the paper had been forced to close.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">As the scandal continued shares in BSkyB fell 8% as investor confidence waned in a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/54ae63d6-a969-11e0-bcc2-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1RXXbGcdz\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">bid for the broadcaster by Murdoch\u2019s News International<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">If nothing else the ongoing scandal ought to have focused attention on the incestuous relationship between government and media. Or at least it should have but most media commentators have passed over this aspect of the scandal without comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Murdoch\u2019s nickname \u2013 the \u201cDirty Digger\u201d \u2013 finally seems to have caught up with him however, as the scandal over hacking threatens to go \u201ctoxic.\u201d The best he can do right now is distance himself from it and protect his U.S. investments, where he is not seen quite as badly as he is in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However, even if Murdoch\u2019s empire does suffer irreparable damage not all the elite will mourn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">The fact is that the elite are often at odds with each other and the British Royal Family in particular, having endured much attention from Murdoch\u2019s media, certainly won\u2019t lament its demise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In fact Prince Phillip is said to hate Murdoch.
