Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Figure-masquarading-as-Rupert-Murdoch-at-the-launch-of-the-campaign-group-Hacked-near-Uk-Parliament-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Figure-masquarading-as-Rupert-Murdoch-at-the-launch-of-the-campaign-group-Hacked-near-Uk-Parliament-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Figure-masquarading-as-Rupert-Murdoch-at-the-launch-of-the-campaign-group-Hacked-near-Uk-Parliament.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Rupert Murdoch <\/span>has dominated the British media for a generation but mounting outrage over the phone hacking of the bereaved families of murder victims and fallen soldiers has forced him into a tactical retreat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">On\u00a0Thursday afternoon Rupert\u2019s son and heir apparent James Murdoch appeared before News of the World staff to announce that News International\u2019s best selling Sunday newspaper will be printed for the last time\u00a0on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Former News of the World editor and now News International chief executive, Rebekah Brooks reportedly\u00a0told staff that there was no other option in the wake of the phone hacking scandal that has rocked the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Advertisers such as\u00a0Dixons, Npower, the Halifax bank, Virgin Holidays, The Co-operative Group, Vauxhall and Mitsubishi were all\u00a0said to be\u00a0considering withdrawing their adverts from the paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Brooks announcement was reportedly met with anger among staff. One source telling Sky News that there was &#8216;mass anger in the newsroom, much of it directed at Rebekah Brooks&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">However, media analysts say all is not necessarily lost for New International. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">News of World employees are to be offered other positions in Murdoch\u2019s media empire, while Murdoch himself might take the opportunity of launching a Sunday edition of his daily Sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Murdoch is thought to have been considering launching a Sunday edition of the daily for some time and the demise of the News of the World opens a vacant spot for its launch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Meanwhile the ramifications from the phone hacking scandal continue to reverberate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Former Scotland Yard deputy assistant commissioner Brian Paddick was quoted as saying that he understood that News International was handing over details about police officers who had been paid for tip-offs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Mr Paddick told the BBC: \u201cRebekah Brooks had told the House of Commons committee back in 2003 that they were paying police officers for information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cYesterday I met a journalist who said he was paying sometimes \u00a320,000 to \u00a330,000 to police officers for information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">\u201cAll of this is done in a very clandestine way. You know the stories about a drive-through fast food restaurant near the News International headquarters &#8211; that&#8217;s where police officers used to go to collect envelopes. It was all done very discreetly. Among them the bereaved famillies of soldeirs killed in Iraq and Afghanistan; the voicemail of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2011788\/News-World-phone-hacking-Cameron-calls-inquiry-Milly-Dowler-hack.html?ito=feeds-newsxml\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">murdered Milly Dowler<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">, while she was still missing and before\u00a0the 13-year-old&#8217;s body was found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">As the scandal has unfolded the value of satelitte broadcaster BskyB shares\u00a0have tumbled 5%. This while News International is in the process of trying to takeover the broadcaster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">For the time being at least, New International&#8217;s bid appears to be on hold and with mounting public anger may indeed be over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">All we can do now is hope that public anger over the phone hacking will spread and help topple other bastions of our so-called \u201cfree-press\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">In the end analysis though the scandal engulfing Murdoch\u2019s newspaper says as much about government as it does about journalist\u2019s ethics.
