While this may seem like an advance for Western defence technology it actually reflects how many potential adversaries have now overtaken the West in the development of new weapons.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because the proposed hypersonic interceptor is still on the drawing board at Northrop. It has yet to be developed, built and tested and even on the most optimistic timetable that could still take years.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile China<\/a>, Russia<\/a>, Iran<\/a> and now Yemen<\/a> all have hypersonic weapons operational and deployed.<\/p>\n

Note that Yemen, one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world has hypersonic missile technology. No doubt this was provided with help from Iran but it\u2019s still a measure of how far the West is falling behind. Ed.<\/p>\n

Northrop to build first Hypersonic Glide Phase Interceptor<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Northrop Grumman has been selected by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to develop the world\u2019s first Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI), a cutting-edge defence system designed to counter hypersonic missile threats.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The move follows a three-year collaborative effort between Northrop Grumman and the MDA to create an innovative system capable of addressing both current and emerging threats in the hypersonic domain.<\/p>\n

The GPI will be launched from the U.S. Navy\u2019s Aegis Ballistic Missile Defence destroyers and Aegis Ashore installations, using the standard Vertical Launch System.<\/p>\n

In this next phase, Northrop Grumman will refine the preliminary design and demonstrate how the system performs under hypersonic conditions, with plans to carry out flight experiments ahead of schedule. These tests will build on the company\u2019s proven track record with missile systems.<\/p>\n

Wendy Williams, Vice President and General Manager of Northrop Grumman\u2019s Launch and Missile Defence Systems, highlighted the significance of the new technology. \u201cGPI gives warfighters a critical standoff capability in situations where distance is key. Adaptable to a wide range of mission needs, Northrop Grumman\u2019s revolutionary solution is built to handle the rapidly changing threat landscape.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Northrop Grumman\u2019s design features advanced technologies, including a seeker to track threats and ensure hit-to-kill accuracy, a re-ignitable upper stage engine for enhanced control, and a dual engagement mode to take on targets at different altitudes.<\/p>\n

The company will also work alongside Japan\u2019s Ministry of Defence as part of a joint development programme to deliver interceptors to the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.<\/p>\n
