{"id":293158,"date":"2024-08-16T07:03:30","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T07:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=293158"},"modified":"2024-08-17T05:46:18","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T05:46:18","slug":"israel-cannot-eliminate-hamas-us-officials-believe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thetruthseeker.co.uk\/?p=293158","title":{"rendered":"Israel \u2018cannot eliminate Hamas,\u2019 US officials believe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Arab News \u2013 Aug 15, 2024<\/strong><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>New York Times reports on shifting opinions within Biden administration<\/li>\n<li>Failure to release hostages shows ceasefire is only path forward for IDF, officials say<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>London: Senior US officials say Israel\u2019s continued bombardment of Gaza only risks civilian casualties after the IDF \u201cachieved all that it can militarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times reported that national security officials in Washington believe Israel will never be able to eliminate Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>As the Biden administration pushes to restore ceasefire negotiations, senior officials are moving toward calling for an outright cessation of IDF activity in the enclave.<\/p>\n<p>Since October, Israel claims to have killed about 14,000 combatants.<\/p>\n<p>It also declared that about half of the leadership of Hamas\u2019s armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, had been killed, including Mohammed Deif and Marwan Issa.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas, however, continues to deny that Deif was killed in a July 13 airstrike.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Israel\u2019s claims, the IDF has yet to achieve one of its major goals in securing the return of about 115 living and deceased hostages who were captured on Oct. 7 last year.<\/p>\n<p>Current and former officials from both the US and Israel told the NYT this could not be achieved through military means.<\/p>\n<p>Gen. Joseph Votel, former head of US Central Command, said: \u201cIsrael has been able to disrupt Hamas, kill a number of their leaders and largely reduce the threat to Israel that existed before Oct. 7.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Hamas was now \u201ca diminished\u201d organization, the release of the hostages \u201ccould be secured only through negotiations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The opinion shift among US officials comes as Washington sends its top envoys across the Middle East in a bid to strengthen prospects of a Gaza ceasefire and avert an Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Figures including CIA Director William Burns, envoy Amos Hochstein and Middle East coordinator Brett McGurk have been dispatched to Qatar, Egypt and Lebanon, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Friction has also surfaced within Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s war cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli leader this week rebuked his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, for disputing the government\u2019s stated goal of achieving \u201ctotal victory\u201d over Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>Gallant has argued that reaching a ceasefire is the best option to ensure the return of Israeli hostages.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has also struggled to prevent Hamas cells in Gaza from regrouping in the wake of IDF declarations of victory in local battles.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Israel claimed to have destroyed a Hamas presence in northern Gaza\u2019s Jabaliya camp but was forced to return in May following the re-emergence of fighters.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas\u2019s vast tunnel network, which \u201cproved much larger than Israel anticipated,\u201d has been crucial in its strategy of rebuilding local cells in the wake of skirmishing, the NYT said.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in the Pentagon have privately complained that Israel has failed to demonstrate an ability to firmly secure territory in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph Goff, a former CIA official who served in the Middle East, told the NYT: \u201cHamas is largely depleted but not wiped out, and the Israelis may never achieve the total annihilation of Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within the Biden administration, opinion is growing that Hamas should be guaranteed its survival, albeit on the sidelines of Gazan politics, as a precursor to a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest incentive, however, remains the chance of a pathway to an independent Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.pk\/node\/2567516\/middle-east\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The longer the war drags on the worse things look for Israel.
