in major blow to Zelensky"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Biden ruled out Ukraine joining Nato following ceasefire with Russia<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Says Ukraine would have to rely on West to fend off second Russian offensive<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Sabrina Penty \u2013 Daily Mail June 5, 2024<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/joe-biden\/index.html\"><strong>Joe Biden<\/strong><\/a> has opposed Ukraine&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/nato\/index.html\"><strong>Nato<\/strong><\/a> membership in the event of a peace deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/russia-ukraine-conflict\/index.html\"><strong>Russia<\/strong><\/a>, which has come as a major blow to Volodymyr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/volodymyr-zelensky\/index.html\"><strong>Zelensky<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after it was reported last month that Russian leader Vladimir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/vladimir_putin\/index.html\"><strong>Putin<\/strong><\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13458699\/Putin-wants-ceasefire-Ukraine-war-costs-sell-territorial-gains-victory-home-advance-require-mass-mobilisation.html\"><strong>ready to &#8216;freeze the war&#8217;<\/strong><\/a> in Ukraine if a negotiated ceasefire that recognises the current battlefield lines can be agreed.<\/p>\n<p>However, ahead of Nato&#8217;s annual summit, which is set to take place on July 9, the US president said that peace &#8216;doesn&#8217;t mean Nato,&#8217; as the alliance&#8217;s top diplomats met in Prague.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It means we have a relationship with them like we do with other countries, where we supply weapons so they can defend themselves in the future,&#8217; he added.<\/p>\n<p>President of Ukraine Zelensky had sought for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2024\/06\/04\/ukraine-russia-war-live-russia-losses-casualties-nato-years\/#:~:text=Joe%20Biden%20has%20ruled%20out,off%20a%20second%20Russian%20offensive.\"><strong> Ukraine to enter Nato <\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in the event of a ceasefire, arguing\u00a0that Putin is likely to stage another invasion.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, however, declared that he was &#8216;not prepared for the Nato-isation of Ukraine,&#8217; insisting that the West would have to come to Zelensky&#8217;s defence in order\u00a0to fend off another Russian offensive, as stated under Article 5 of the Nato treaty.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he had seen &#8216;significant corruption&#8217;\u00a0 in Ukraine after a visit as vice president.<\/p>\n<p>The US president still stressed the importance of the West&#8217;s role in preventing Kyiv falling to Russia, however, and warned that Poland and other territories could also &#8216;go down&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of war-torn Ukraine joining Nato has been entertained ever since<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10546123\/How-Ukraine-invasion-unfolded-minute-minute.html\"><strong> Russia invaded back in February 2022.\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the US secretary of state A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary-antony-j-blinken-at-a-solo-press-availability-3\/#:~:text=And%20our%20purpose%20now%20is,strong%20and%20very%20well%2Dlit.\"><strong>nthony Blinken last week said <\/strong><\/a>that Nato members would &#8216;put in place the bridge to bring Ukraine closer and ultimately into Nato,&#8217; Biden&#8217;s stance seems to interfere with any hope for Ukraine&#8217;s membership.<\/p>\n<p>According to Reuters, Nato secretary general Jens Stoltenberg has proposed a commitment to maintain at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/nato-boss-seeks-40-bln-euros-per-year-ukraine-military-aid-source-says-2024-05-30\/\"><strong>40 billion euros <\/strong><\/a>in annual support for Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Nato foreign ministers met in Prague to discuss efforts to bring about a support package for Ukraine ahead of Nato&#8217;s summit in Washington next month.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin, however, accused Nato of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13476043\/Russia-says-NATO-provoking-Ukraine-prolonging-senseless-war-Putin-started.html\"><strong> &#8216;provoking&#8217; Kyiv <\/strong><\/a>into prolonging the conflict in Ukraine, whose officials have been appealing for permission from allies to target Russia with Western-supplied weapons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Nato member states, the United States, and capitals in Europe in recent days and weeks have been entering a new round of escalations in tensions and they are doing it deliberately,&#8217; Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They are provoking Ukraine in every possible way into continuing this senseless war,&#8217; Peskov told reporters during a daily briefing.<\/p>\n<p>Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with Vladimir Putin claiming that his nation was &#8216;fighting fiercely for its future, repelling the aggression of neo-Nazis and their masters&#8217;, referring to Ukraine and the West.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, his brutal invasion &#8211;
